Today we’d like to introduce you to Wanyi Ma.
Hi Wanyi, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am from a coastal city in southern China. I am currently studying in the SCAD motion media MFA program. I have been exposed to art-related courses since I was very young. My parents discovered my interest in drawing when I scribbled on a white wall at home, and they began to develop my drawing skills by sending me to professional art classes. Since then, I have been exposed to art-related things in my life. I studied the basic techniques of painting until I enrolled in my undergraduate program. I wanted to step out of that comfort zone. After I entered college for the first time, I chose a very different undergraduate major, Multimedia Stage Design. This major is in multimedia stage design, which includes building stages, learning to control lighting, and creating stage background animations. I quickly became interested in the multimedia production content. It wasn’t until I graduated that I started looking for a job. However, I found that the scope of my studies was so broad that I did not study all aspects of the major in depth. I began preparing for a graduate degree and chose the Motion Media program as my field of study. This program focuses on the development and language of motion graphics for multimedia production. I think I have found a specialization that interests me and is worth studying. I am not sure what the future holds for me, but I enjoy the stimulation I get from studying the intellectual content of this specialization in the present.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course, this road is not very smooth. Because both my undergraduate and graduate majors required me to learn to create dynamic images using new media software or media hardware. The difficulty with this is that sometimes I need to quickly learn how to use a software to create content for my work. But often this is not always possible. For example, when I was learning to make animations with programming, I planned to spend an evening studying the programming language. But the end result was a failure, and I didn’t achieve what I wanted to achieve.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My animation work involves frame-by-frame animation, 3d animation, illustration animation and graphic animation. I think what I am most proud of is my eye for research and judging my work. In animation work, I want my animation work to present images that are cinematic and composed. And I have done just that. What makes me different is that I have a pair of glasses that always find the sparkle. From time to time I see a very harmonious composition in life and in film and want to apply it to the images in my work.
What are your plans for the future?
The main thing on my list of future plans is to find a job within the motion industry as a 3-D animator. I also have a few other items on my list that are not on the agenda but are under consideration. For example, I am considering opening an animation studio or continuing my studies.
