Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Scurlark
Hi Wendy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Well, buckle up—it’s been a ride! I started my career in the beauty biz, where I was the queen of curls and the boss of blowouts. I owned several salons and ruled the hair game for 21 fabulous years. But eventually, I hit a ceiling—not with the hair, but with the number of clients I could squeeze into a day and the money I could realistically charge without including a foot massage and life coaching session.
That’s when I said, *”Okay, it’s time to pivot!”* So I jumped head-first into real estate, becoming both a residential and commercial broker. I had a pretty successful run flipping keys and closing deals, but then something unexpected happened—my heart got pulled in a whole new direction.
My sister, Shannon Jones (the peanut butter to my jelly), and I had a lightbulb moment when our beloved aunt, who has dementia, needed transportation to her appointments. Let me tell you—it was like trying to catch a unicorn. We realized how *shockingly* few non-emergency transportation companies existed, especially ones that cared. So we rolled up our sleeves and went to our favorite college… YouTube University. I’m a loyal, binge-watching alumna. Class of “How To Start a Business 101.”
That’s when we stumbled upon a video by Hanz Frequire, and let me just say—if stalking were a sport, I’d be wearing gold. I tracked him down and practically *begged* him to start a mentorship program for us. Thank goodness he didn’t file a restraining order and instead welcomed us into his mentorship circle.
By January 2023, we launched our company with Shannon’s dispatch experience and a big vision: to transport every patient with the same love and care we gave our aunt. Since then, we’ve completed hundreds of rides for VA patients, nursing homes, dialysis clinics, and hospital discharges across metro Atlanta. And honestly? Every time I meet a family and help safely transport their loved ones—aka their most precious cargo—it fills my heart in a way I didn’t expect.
It turns out, all those years building relationships behind the salon chair or negotiating real estate deals trained me for this. Connection is at the center of everything I do. And when you build a business with love, purpose, and a little hustle… magic happens.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth? *Ha!* Only if you count potholes, detours, and a few emotional flat tires as smooth! Don’t get me wrong—it’s been rewarding, but this road came with its fair share of *”what in the world did we get ourselves into?”* moments.
First off, getting into the transportation industry felt like trying to learn a new language… while being chased. There are regulations, licensing, vehicle requirements, insurance policies that read like ancient scrolls, and don’t get me started on figuring out how to properly sanitize an ambulance!
Hiring and keeping reliable EMTs and drivers was another adventure. You learn really quickly that not everyone shares your level of care or sense of urgency—especially when you’re transporting someone’s grandma to dialysis at 6am. We had to build a team who got the assignment: compassion over convenience, always.
And of course, as two women entering an industry traditionally dominated by men, there were moments where we had to channel our inner Beyoncé and remind folks, *“Who Run the world?!.”*
But through all the bumps and bruises, every challenge sharpened us. We learned to pivot, pray, and keep the vision clear: treat every patient like family and never compromise on care. The road hasn’t been smooth, but let’s just say—we’ve gotten really good at off-roading.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At our core, we’re a non-emergency medical transportation company—but honestly, what we really do is move people with purpose and a whole lot of heart. We specialize in transporting patients to and from dialysis, VA appointments, nursing facilities, and hospital discharges—all with care, compassion, and just a sprinkle of fabulousness.
We are proudly known as “The Pink Girls”—and no, that’s not just a cute nickname. Our ambulances are literally pink and blue, and yes, every muscle-bound firefighter and EMT we hire wears PINK. Pink shirts, pink scrubs, pink sheets on the stretchers. It’s a vibe. People stop us on the street to ask, “Wait… was that a pink ambulance?” Yup. That was us. We don’t just stand out—we pull up and make a whole scene. 💅
And while we bring the color and charisma, the backbone of our business is family. Our mother, Felecia Onry, is our billing guru. She’s the quiet genius behind the scenes making sure our paperwork is tight, our numbers make sense, and the business stays financially healthy. Having her as part of our operations has been a game-changer—we call her the silent assassin of the billing world. She keeps us in check with love… and spreadsheets.
What we’re most proud of, though, is the relationships we’ve built—with patients, families, and facilities. We treat every transport like it’s our own aunt, uncle, or grandparent. And people feel that. We’re not just another company picking folks up—we’re a part of their healing journey, and that’s something we don’t take lightly.
We may wear pink, but make no mistake—we are fierce, we are focused, and we are fully committed to shaking up this industry with style, service, and a little sass.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Oh honey, grab your coffee (or wine—no judgment), because I’ve got a few gems.
First and foremost: Start ugly. Don’t wait for the perfect logo, website, or custom uniforms. We literally started with a dream, a notepad, and YouTube tutorials. Perfection will paralyze you—progress is the real goal. Just move!
Second: Your network is your net worth. Find mentors, ask questions, stalk people (professionally, of course). I hunted down our mentor like it was a full-time job—and it paid off. Don’t be afraid to shoot your shot. The worst they can say is “no,” and you’ve survived worse (like group projects or bad hair days).
Third: Know your numbers. I wish someone would’ve told me that running a transportation company meant also getting a crash course in logistics, compliance, and finance. Luckily, our mom Felecia was born to be a billing boss and kept us from going broke in matching tracksuits. But seriously—understand the business side. You can have the passion, but without the plan, it won’t go far.
And lastly: Lead with heart, always. People can feel when you’re doing something for the right reasons. Our patients and their families know that we care deeply—it’s what sets us apart. Compassion isn’t extra credit—it’s the main ingredient.
Oh—and if you’re going to make your male employees wear pink, just make sure they’re secure in their masculinity and can still lift a stretcher with one hand. That’s what we did, and it’s working out just fine.
