Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Henderson.
Painting, once a favorite pastime of childhood, turned into a quiet obsession and career for Stephanie Henderson as she approached midlife. As her children grew up and each day presented more time to explore her creative side, Stephanie picked up the brushes, untouched since college art classes, and began to paint her way into a new chapter of life. As Stephanie sees things, each breaking day offers a fresh opportunity to pursue complete happiness at the easel.
“Much of my work springs from the images that dance through my head on the cusp of sleep, a time when my brain lets down its guard and allows the subconscious to assert itself.” After experimenting with multiple styles and media over the years, Stephanie has settled down to two general styles: hard-edged, bold acrylic paintings shouting color, and quieter more realistic representations in oil of arrowheads, box turtles and the warm water of the Gulf of Mexico.”
Stephanie is a native of Thomasville, Georgia, and has lived in Atlanta for the past 25 years. She is a graduate of the University of Virginia and holds a master’s degree from the University of Georgia. Her works are available in Atlanta through Gregg Irby Gallery and in Boston through Libby Silvia Art style.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My art is about color and how colors speak to each other. My paintings contain forms that are quite simple, which allow the colors to express themselves without complications. My art is about bold, beautiful, unadulterated color and how it affects the observer. For me, painting has never been about putting my own feelings on the canvas. I see myself simply as a conduit for the color, getting it from the tube to the canvas or panel in a form that allows maximum appreciation of its beauty.
How can artists connect with other artists?
I found that following other local artists on Instagram helped me grow connections. Eventually, you run into many of the artists you’ve gotten to know over social media.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Stephanie’s works can be found in Atlanta at Gregg Irby Gallery, with an upcoming show in July of her “Good Fit” diptych series and “Little Dots” on paper series.
Her work is on display in the Mashburn store in Atlanta’s Westside Provisions District, as well as Ann and Sid Mashburn’s stores in Dallas TX and Washington DC.
