Today we’d like to introduce you to Symfonee Henderson.
Symfonee, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My artrepreneur journey came about early on. As I’ve always had a love for art as a child, I started honing in on my skills whenever I got the opportunity in high school. As I learned about creative expression in art class by day, I developed my art style as I created wearable art for my peers by night. My best friend and I became the “go-to” for customized shirts and sneakers in high school and in our neighborhood back home. We even coordinated our own fashion show our senior year. From there, I’ve carried the desire to be an artrepreneur while managing to obtain other skills and pursue my goals.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall, my journey has been everything but easy. I’m beyond grateful for every experience I’ve endured along the way. It was a struggle facing daily pressures of living out everyone’s idea of success and combatting negative thoughts and doubtful behavior from people I thought would support me. Then, making a name for myself was an entire task in itself. My amazing parents were being their true creative selves when they named me “Symphony” with a phonetic spelling, so I’ve always dealt with the assumption of being musically inclined, which I once was at some point in my life. But I’ve always had a strong interest in art forms other than music, as well. The biggest challenge I’ve experienced while on my journey is being easily drawn into other projects or ideas other than my own, while being a sense of support when needed to the people around me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Gallery Symf is the art business I established to highlight all my work, ranging from paintings, clothes to commercial and home decor. I specialize in abstract and word art. I am best known for the music inspired “Sounds of Color” series. I’m also known for the Lipstick Lyrics” interactive mural created for women of all walks of life and the pizza box designs for Slim and Husky’s Pizza Beeria and the National Museum of African American Music. I’m most proud of the face painting services provided during the Annual African Street Festival and the painting series featured in “These Walls Talk” art show coordinated by VaVavoom. The many talents I possess set me apart from the rest. I can’t wait to show the world what’s next!
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Being optimistic and innovative got me here. I never limited my skills or let anyone tell me what I have in mind can’t be done! Remaining positive and confident are great qualities to have through it all. I never compare myself to the next artist or let anyone make it a competitive atmosphere. Art isn’t meant to be competitive, it’s an expression one uses to set themselves free. We’re all unique in our own way with a skill to share with the world. I always look forward to embracing every creative I cross paths with and acknowledge them for their talent. As a creative, the most important part of success is staying focused on the main goal you have set. It’s also important to understand people won’t always see your vision when you don’t have the same dreams. Let those same people watch you make your dreams become your reality.
