Community Highlights: Meet Alysia Leyva of The Doula Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alysia Leyva

Hi Alysia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Motherhood and pregnancy have always been important to me as a mother of two. I’ve always been a community advocate, and I was hurt to see such a vast gap in maternal mortality in the minority community. So many women are dying during or after childbirth, and it’s not talked about enough. I want people to start having this conversation to facilitate change indeed. My purpose and mission is to help create birth equality AND train other birth workers. I hope to help change the world with love, knowledge, support, and advocacy.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I love being an entrepreneur. It allows me to manage my time, keeping me busy, but I thrive on constantly moving. My family is a part of everything I do, so it’s a family affair. I don’t know if there’s such a thing as work/life balance, so I try to account for most of the hours of my day. I live by a planner. I do most of my work while my children are at school or once they go to bed at night. That way, they have most of my time when they get home.

I wish that more people would hire a Doula. Even if you feel like it’s outside of your budget, ask. Many Doulas have payment plans, and some offer free services-research as much as possible about birth and the 4th trimester (postpartum). As a patient, you should demand informed consent, so inquire with your provider and assert yourself. Listen to your body. If you sense something is amiss, it likely is. If you require serious attention, seek assistance elsewhere.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Doula Academy is the training program where I train birth workers. It’s an independent certification agency focusing on providing a seamless training experience that aligns with traditional training methods. Certification births aren’t required, and trainees receive real-life in-person experiences. Programs include Birth Doula and Belly Binding Certifications. Postpartum Certification is coming soon! We also have yearly diaper giveaways and free 3d/4d elective ultrasounds for underserved communities. The academy resides in Alpharetta, Georgia.

What’s next?
I am eager to keep raising awareness about the significance of birth workers, and I truly hope that one day they will be included in all insurance plans. I plan to broaden my training program to incorporate postpartum Doula training and additional childbirth education classes.

Pricing:

  • Doula Training – $799
  • Belly Binding Training – $599
  • Birth Doula -$1300
