Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew And Malaika Wells.
Hi Andrew and Malaika, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We were married for six years before either of us knew Christ. In May of 2004, on the same night, the Gospel interrupted our lives—and everything changed. We found faith together, and with it, a new way of seeing marriage, purpose, and calling.
Over the next six years, we served faithfully as ministers, armor-bearers, and elders across several ministries. In 2011, we sensed a clear and specific call toward marriages and launched Coupled in Christ. In those early years, our focus was close to home—walking alongside married couples in our own fellowship and extended circles through Bible studies, social gatherings, and by helping facilitate difficult but necessary conversations.
As our reach expanded, so did the diversity of stories we encountered. We began serving couples from different backgrounds, seasons, and levels of brokenness. Somewhere along that journey, while pouring into others, we quietly neglected our own marriage. What followed was a deeply challenging season—one that tested our faith, our family, our identity in Christ and our resolve.
That season did not break us, but it did refine us. We emerged with hard-earned resilience, renewed hope, and a clearer understanding of what couples actually need—not just encouragement, but practical strategy. We became deeply committed to equipping couples with systems, habits, boundaries, and tools that help prevent unnecessary conflict and provide support when conflict is unavoidable.
Out of that refinement came a more integrated approach. We began intentionally blending our ministerial calling and biblical foundation with our professional experience in leadership, organizational consulting, systems-building, and community organizing. Today, our work through Coupled in Christ reflects that union—faith-rooted, honest about struggle, and grounded in practices that help couples not just survive, but grow stronger together.
With more than 25 years of marriage experience, we are dedicated to guiding couples towards stronger, Christ-centered relationships filled with hope and faith. When couples work with us, they aren’t just getting one skill set—they’re getting the whole of who we are and what we’ve lived and learned.
They experience us as organizational behavior consultants who know how to resolve conflict, strengthen culture, and bring clarity to systems that feel tangled or stuck. We help couples examine the “policies” of their marriage—the unspoken rules, habits, workflows, and patterns—and decide what needs to be kept, refined, or rebuilt so the relationship can function with greater peace and purpose.
They also encounter us as educators. With training at the graduate level, we pay close attention to how people learn, communicate, and process change. We don’t hand couples a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, we assess learning styles and design tools and practices that actually fit the way each spouse thinks, listens, and grows.
At the same time, we come as ministers. We guide through a spiritual lens, lead with empathy, and gently but truthfully point couples back to sound Christian doctrine. We encourage the use of spiritual gifts, invite repentance and renewal where needed, and offer loving reproof when growth requires it.
Couples also experience us as organizers—people who know how to bring voices to the table, surface what’s really going on, build consensus, and align interests without sacrificing honesty or authenticity. We help couples move from tension and confusion toward shared direction.
And as homeschool parents ourselves, we understand the unique pressures of family life, calling, and responsibility. We know how easy it is for vision to outrun capacity. We help couples bring aspiration into alignment with intention, honest assessment, and practical next steps.
Underlying all of this is a deep commitment to emotional intelligence. We help couples grow in self-awareness, empathy, communication, and regulation—because healthy marriages aren’t built on good intentions alone, but on the daily practice of wisdom, humility, and love.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of our struggle came down to clarity—or the lack of it. We weren’t always clear on roles, and we filled our lives with too many good things without asking which ones were truly necessary for the season we were in. We set big goals but didn’t always break them down into meaningful intermediate steps, and we rarely paused to celebrate the small wins that signal real progress.
We also failed to fully leverage the community and relationships already around us. At the same time, we avoided hard conversations about the real cost of the ministry—especially the impact on our personal finances—even as we could clearly see its potential to be life-sustaining rather than draining.
And perhaps most honestly, our boundaries were weak. We said yes too often, rested too little, and underestimated how much margin a marriage and family actually need to remain healthy.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Coupled In Christ?
We serve as relationship coaches for Christian, married couples, meeting people honestly where they are and walking with them through the season they’re in. Over time, we’ve learned that marriage doesn’t struggle or thrive in a single way—it moves through stages, each with its own pressures, questions, and opportunities for growth. That awareness is what helped us author, “The Hope Informed Marriage: New Hope for Old Hurts.”
We currently serve couples across five key seasons of marriage. We walk with newlyweds through the first seven years via the AROMA method, helping them build strong foundations early. We support couples married seven years or more through EQUIPA, where the focus is refinement—strengthening what’s already there and addressing what’s quietly eroding connection. We serve homeschooling families through the Healthy Homeschool Marriage (HHM), helping couples restore balance, unity, and margin in a life that often asks too much. And we come alongside couples in crisis through The Hope-Informed Marriage (HIM), offering structure, truth, and grace when the marriage feels fragile and the future uncertain.
Within each of these seasons, we offer several ways for couples to engage with us. Some walk with us through coaching—whether premarital counseling, couples coaching, or a 2-to-1 model where each spouse is supported individually while the marriage remains the focus. Others join us through online monthly group coaching, where learning and encouragement happen in community. Some experience us through our online teaching platforms and local workshops.
We believe marriage grows best when it’s not isolated. That’s why we create spaces for social engagement—organized meetups, workshops, book talks, and community Bible studies. Retreats are on the horizon, along with deeper immersive experiences designed to give couples time, space, and perspective.
Our work also extends through books and courses, offering couples tools they can return to again and again as their marriage grows and changes. In the near future, we’re expanding into retreats and a subscription-based online community of practice, where couples can stay connected, supported, and resourced over the long term.
What truly sets our work apart isn’t a single program or offering—it’s our approach. We bring together the best of our lived and professional experience, our ministerial training, and our years as facilitators who know how to guide hard conversations with care and clarity. Above all, we carry a deep conviction that this work is a calling, and we treat the marriages entrusted to us with the honor, sincerity, and hope they deserve.
