Community Highlights: Meet Arkisha Brownell of Veracity Esthetics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arkisha Brownell.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am the owner of Veracity Esthetics, where I specialize in Facials, Vajacials and Waxing. Skin is my passion. I got into the beauty industry, specifically skin, because I saw the need for people like me in the industry: black women, especially someone like me with a darker complexion. I grew up in Seattle, WA. I loved taking care of my skin. When I would go see an esthetician back home, it was always Asians and Whites working in the office. And I felt like they didn’t really understand my skin, and the sunscreen they would recommend was not for my complexion. It would make me look ashy and I hated that. When I moved to Atlanta, I saw all these young entrepreneurs and that motivated me to want more for myself. It pushed me to do what I’ve been afraid to do, and that was to enroll in school and start by own business as an esthetician. Almost two years later, since I moved to Atlanta, I can now provide services to people like myself and more.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road. My whole journey since being in Atlanta has been a roller coaster ride. But I’ll do it all over again if I had to. Esthetic school is a year program, but it took me about a year and four months to finish. Getting sick and missing school, COVID, catch Covid and breaks. Then comes taking the risk of using all my saves to start the business. I believe in myself and vision that I didn’t think twice about using ALL the money I had to get equipment, supplies and pay for space rental with no clients. I know it sounds crazy, but I did it. Manifestation and prayers will get me through, I believe.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Veracity Esthetics, I specialize in Facials, Vajacial and Waxing. I am known for my Vajacials. It’s my top Selling service. My clients compliment me on how clean and sterile I am. My focus is not to be just a service provider. I focus on educating my clients on their skin and condition. I want my clients to understand their skin so that they can do their part at home. Most clients can only see me once a month. Educating my clients and providing recommended at-home routine is very important to me. I want my clients to get the best results. “Skincare is like a diet. You have to invest time and effort. There is no instant miracle cure”.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite memory is my barbies. I remember always looking forward to coming home to play with my dolls. I will bath them every day and change their clothes. I kept them until I was 16 years old.
