Community Highlights: Meet Atiya Wilson of Fancy Pop Gourmet Popcorn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Atiya Wilson.

Hi Atiya, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Fancy Pop Gourmet Popcorn was birthed during covid-19; I was looking for a hobby (now a business) that I could twist together my joy of baking with a dessert I loved to eat! Popcorn is a universal snack that I would purchase throughout the year; after a couple of months of research, I made my first batch of gourmet popcorn in my home kitchen which is now one of my best sellers, cookies n’ cream. Fancy Pop now has its flagship store in Stonecrest, GA and our e-commerce site where we ship nationally.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Opening a business during covid-19 was a rough ride, I’ve learned so much along the way. From permits, government offices being short staffed, shipping delays, inspections, and promoting a specialty business in a growing area; you begin to grow tough skin. Being the first in my immediate family to open a food business, you continue to learn from mistakes and can share these new findings with those that want to embark on your same journey.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Fancy Pop is a gourmet popcorn shop that also provides gifting options and sweets for our popcorn family. Fancy Pop specializes in unique, handmade flavors which are customers have said our popcorn is “made with love”. We are the best tasting gourmet popcorn as we don’t just use food flavoring and dye colors, but we make popcorn like you would make cake.

Fancy Pop has an 800 sq ft space readily available for events along with the events we put on for our customers. We can host book signings, birthday parties, political events, and so much more!

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’m not sure if it’s luck or faith but from the initial approval, assistance with financing and the ability to open a business while working full-time; there was a driving force behind me. I also say I have angels and during the process of opening, they helped guide me. I kept seeing the number 444 which means “you’re going in the right direction” so I kept fighting and pushing for my dreams. My angels are my father whom I lost when I was three and my aunt who passed in 2001.
