Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Young.
Hi Brandon, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Brandon Young grew up in Center Point, Alabama, graduating from Erwin High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Auburn University. While in college, he trained with the Alabama Army National Guard’s construction facility management program, building an early foundation in infrastructure and operations. After graduating, Brandon worked briefly at Savannah River Nuclear Solutions before beginning a six-year career at Burns & McDonnell, where he managed large-scale energy transmission and infrastructure projects. During this time, he also completed a master’s degree in construction engineering management at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
A major turning point in Brandon’s life came in 2019 following the tragic murder of his brother, Randy Young. This profound loss reshaped his priorities and motivated him to fully commit to his entrepreneurial vision. That year, Brandon stepped away from traditional corporate roles and dedicated 100% of himself to growing Young Management & Consulting, marking the beginning of the company’s next phase of growth and impact. YMC is built as a professional services firm offering strategic project management, construction management, sourcing and procurement, and technology services—especially in the energy, infrastructure, and technology sectors. It is also a certified disadvantaged business enterprise (DBE), giving it access to supplier diversity opportunities with large clients.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Brandon Young’s journey has been anything but smooth or linear. Like many entrepreneurs building from the ground up, he has faced significant challenges that tested his resilience, resolve, and leadership at every stage.
One of the earliest hurdles was establishing credibility in an industry dominated by much larger, well-established firms. Earning client trust, securing contracts, and demonstrating that a smaller, minority-owned company could perform at the same or higher level required relentless persistence, long hours, and a consistent commitment to exceeding expectations.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Young Management and Consulting (YMC) is a professional service provider that offers customizable services and solutions to clients and customers. We are a safety-focused management and consulting firm. We aim to deliver superior client experiences across the energy industry, infrastructure, and technology industries. Brand-wise, I’m most proud of our ability to stay active in and give back to our community through our YMC Cares initiative. Creating opportunities to support those around us while also building a company that provides meaningful employment locally is something I truly value.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, Brandon Young was known for being driven, disciplined, and quietly determined. He learned early the value of hard work, responsibility, and perseverance. He wasn’t handed opportunities, he earned them, often taking on challenges with a mindset focused on progress rather than recognition.
From a young age, Brandon showed a natural curiosity for how things worked and a strong sense of accountability. He balanced ambition with humility, staying grounded in his family and community while setting his sights on goals beyond what he had seen around him. Being the first in his family to attend college shaped his outlook early on; it instilled both pride and pressure, motivating him to succeed not just for himself, but for those who would come after him.
He was also known for his work ethic and resilience. Whether in school, athletics, or early leadership roles, Brandon consistently pushed himself to improve and took setbacks as lessons rather than roadblocks.
