Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlene Beneby
Hi Carlene, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey into the world of cosmetology begin as a child, growing up as a first and second generation, Bahamian American, with two Bahamian parents, I would get my own hair braided as a little girl on a regular schedule every 2 weeks. Being my mom’s only girl, I played with my dolls, experimenting with different styles and as I grew older, I begin doing my mom, my aunts, grandma and cousins hair—my very first clients. Once people saw their results, they fell in love with my braiding skills, which led me to pursue a braiding license in the State of Florida where I was born and raised.
But my passion didn’t stop at braiding. After working at Caleb’s Hair Design in Lake Worth, Fl with the owner who was a close friend, I fell in love with hair in its entirety, and decided to expand my skills by earning a full cosmetology license in the state of Florida.
After I moved to Georgia, I discovered the state had different requirements, so I went back to school to obtain the additional hours needed to earn a Master Cosmetologist license in Georgia, which I am proud to currently hold today. Through dedication and perseverance, I’ve turned my childhood passion into a thriving career, and that’s how Studio 242 Beauty Salon came to life.
The name of my salon Studio 242 Beauty is a representation of my culture and heritage. It is the area code of the Bahamas.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like any other salon, Studio 242 Beauty Salon has faced its share of obstacles and challenges. One of the key challenges is maintaining a consistent book of business—ensuring a steady flow of clients.. Staying creative and finding new ways to keep clients engage is also critical, as the beauty industry is always evolving.
Remaining relevant in such a fast pace, environment requires consistent learning, adapting to trends, and refining skills to meet the needs of a diverse clientele. These are challenges I’ve embrace as a part of my journey.
We’ve been impressed with Studio 242 Beauty Salon, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Studio 242 Beauty salon offers an exceptional, personalized experience for the client seeking both high quality hair care and a relaxing, intimate environment. Led by myself, a Licensed Master Cosmetologist in the state of Georgia, our salon specializes in healthy hair, silk press, and braiding, with additional services that include scalp treatments, extensions, Sewins , color, cuts, and personalized consultations.
At Studio 242, we pride ourselves on creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that allows clients to feel completely at ease. Unlike the bustling environment of many salons, Studio 242 offers a serene space where clients can unwind without distraction.
What distinguishes Studio 242 from other salons is the deep personal connection we fostered with our clients. More than just a stylist, I take on the role of a trusted confidant offering a listening ear and support through every day challenges. This unique blend of expert hair care and genuine, emotional support ensures that each visit is not just a routine appointment but a transformative, rejuvenating experience. At Studio 242, we are committed to nurturing both the beauty and well-being of our clients inside and out.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck, both good and bad has certainly played a pivotal role in my life, and in the journey of Studio 242 Beauty Salon. Like many business owners, I faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. The mandatory shut down was a major setback, forcing me to temporary close my salon. To adapt, I had to travel to clients homes, maintaining their hair while taking strict safety precautions to ensure both their well-being and my own.
Despite these hardships, there was a silver lining. After relocating to a new location, I found myself in an ideal spot right off of a busy main highway, in a high traffic area, but still with the private intimate atmosphere that sets Studio 242 apart. The move was a stroke of good fortune, as it attracted new clientele while allowing me to continue, offering the personal, one on one service my existing clients had come to appreciate. The most rewarding outcome was the loyalty of my clients, who followed me to the new location once I reopen. Their continued support has been a true blessing, and it’s a testament to the trust and connection we’ve built overtime.
May have brought its share of challenges, but it also provided opportunities that have allowed my business to grow and thrive in ways I never anticipated.
