Today we’d like to introduce you to Claressa Williams
Hi Claressa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My Story
I was a latchkey kid growing up in the heart of South Central Los Angeles—a place where the streets hummed with energy, and every block told its own story. Most days, I’d walk home from school, unlock the door, and step into the quiet of an empty house, left to fill the space with my own imagination. Then one day, when I was 10, my mom asked me a question that would change everything.
“Ressa, what do you want to be when you grow up?”
I sat with that question, letting it roll around in my mind like marbles in a jar. What did I want to be? I didn’t have all the words for it yet, but I knew what I wanted to create—a place where kids like me didn’t have to spend their afternoons alone. A space where music blasted through the walls, where feet stomped rhythms into the floors, where laughter bounced off the ceilings. A place where you could dance like nobody was watching, dream without limits, and make friends who felt more like family.
I imagined a world where art, music, and movement wrapped around us like a warm hug, where kids could be loud, bold, and free. That dream settled deep in my heart, and even as I grew up, it never let me go. Fourteen years ago, that dream became a reality—the Youth Life Center of The Arts was born, a safe haven where tweens and teens could explore who they are through the power of creativity.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Rising Above: How Youth Life Center of The Arts Stands Strong in the Face of Misinformation

For years, we have been dedicated to shaping the future of young people—those who have aged out of traditional after-school care but still need mentorship, creativity, and skill-building to prepare them for what lies ahead.
However, even the most steadfast organizations face challenges. Youth Life Center of The Arts, resilience is woven into our very fabric. Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
A Stage for the Next Generation
Our mission has evolved far beyond a simple gathering space. Today, the Youth Life Center of The Arts is a powerhouse of artistic expression, personal development, and social impact. We create experiences on stage that tell powerful stories—through spoken word, theater, music, and movement, our youth bring their voices to life, finding strength and confidence under the spotlight. From electrifying dance performances to soul-stirring monologues, the stage becomes their canvas, a place to release, heal, and grow during after school, intermittent breaks, and summer time.
Beyond the Stage: A World of Creativity
But the impact doesn’t stop there. We’ve expanded our reach, offering a variety of enrichment programs that introduce youth to fine arts, digital media, culinary arts, fashion, photography, music production, and even martial arts. Each program is designed to ignite curiosity, cultivate talent, and equip our youth with skills that prepare them for real-world success. This isn’t just an afterschool program—it’s a launchpad for the next generation of visionaries, creators, and leaders.
The NextGen Trailblazers: Why They Need Us Now
Our focus is on tweens and teens—the NextGen Youth, our Trailblazers in Training. This is the most vulnerable group, standing at the crossroads of identity, peer pressure, and the challenges of growing up in today’s world. We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is not measured solely by milestones achieved, but by the transformation that takes place within each Youth—when their eyes light up with realization, when something deep within them resonates, and when they break through barriers they once believed were impossible to overcome.
It is found in the moment of self-discovery, when they recognize their own strength, creativity, and resilience. It’s in the journey of perseverance, when they face challenges head-on, refusing to quit because they now believe they are capable. Success is setting the bar so high that even when they fall short, they land among the stars—realizing that the only limits they have are the ones they place on themselves.
