Community Highlights: Meet Corina Genson of Bella Asana Yoga, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Corina Genson.

Hi Corina, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Sure, my name is Corina, I am a mom of two kids under ten, a wife to an amazing guy, and a scientist turned yoga teacher. I graduated from Kennesaw State University with a Bachelor of Science in biology and I hold several certificates in nutrition, health, and lifestyle wellness from Harvard Medical School. I’m an avid athlete that loves food and social gatherings. How I got to where I am today, huh? Well, I have spent my life in public service, and I love serving my community and helping make someone else’s life better. I worked writing, managing and overseeing federal public health contracts for over 15 years, until recently where I opted for a career change, chose to lean into my more creative side, and became a certified children’s yoga teacher. This change helped soothe my body and soul after years of self-sacrificing work that had worn me down and was starting to cause health issues. I loved my job, but the demands and the abuse of the job became the source of a huge amount of stress. Then one day I made the decision to heal, and my outlet was yoga and meditation. After a year or so of dedicated studying and a daily yoga practice, I was a changed person for the better. I chose children’s yoga because of what yoga did for me and I wanted a way to help my own children learn how to regulate their emotions and lead less stressful and happier lives. Thus, Bella Asana Yoga, LLC was born.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In order to tell you how I became a yoga teacher from a public health scientist, we’ll have to go back a little bit to almost 4 years ago, in the early spring of 2022 when I was working for the World Trade Center health program (WTCHP) within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), my stress levels started to get out of control. The work I did was always time sensitive, high-profile, and people’s lives were always at risk. The stress associated with my job was immense, I started gaining weight, I developed gut issues, my sleep was terrible, and my stress levels were making me sick. Meanwhile, I was also working out 6 days of HIIT a week, meal planning, managing a family, traveling for work, and navigating friendships. I also practiced yoga and Pilates sparingly, but nothing made me feel better. As time went on, it all became too much, and I had to find a way to manage my stress levels and improve my health. In July of 2024, I made two choices in the same week. I chose to throw myself into yoga and everything it has to offer by signing up for a yoga teacher certification, and I chose to take a promotional job outside of the WTCHP. Seven months later, I was removed from my government job due to the reduction in force efforts and my whole life flipped on its head in that moment, but thanks to yoga, I was ready for it. I then turned to yoga as a full time career, and what I had learned in my yoga training gave me the tools I needed to get through the transition. I started practicing at home and in the studio. Movement, breathing, and meditation every day. Day by day I worked towards just being happier and more present, and I was. My purpose became more clear and as my stress started to melt away. I knew I had to share this knowledge and gift with others just like me, and more importantly I knew I wanted to share it with my kids, thus my Bella Kids Program was born.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I would say I have several mentors. I have been very lucky to have a group of people who I can turn to that specialize in all different types of crafts and who answer any and every question I may have. I am also a very social individual, to the point where I make friends everywhere I go. So, my advice to someone who is looking for a mentor would be to remember that opportunity ONLY dances with those already on the dance floor, so put yourself out there and let it be known and the right mentor will find you. Namaste.
