Community Highlights: Meet Courtney Davis of Cinematic Vizuals

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Davis

Hi Courtney, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I wanted to start my company because I felt like I needed to forge my own path. I’ve worked in corporate America for many years doing sales. As I became more successful in sales, I always felt like something was missing. Being a creative has always been there because when I was a child, I was a musician. I joined the band in second grade and played all the way through my sophomore year of college. After I stopped playing in college I felt a void and I went without creating for many years. Then everything changed in 2014 when I joined my church. I remember sitting in an interest meeting for the video ministry and they were asking for volunteers. I had no idea how to work a camera, but something kept pulling at me to raise my hand and say yes, I’ll do it. I can honestly say that was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made because I learned how to work a camera with no prior knowledge, and I was also able to serve at my church, which is what I was really there to do. I also had a very hands-on mentor who saw something in me and began to teach me more about cinematography, editing, lighting, etc. After gaining more knowledge and expertise, I started to realize that this was more than just a hobby, and that I could be really be good at it and turn into a business. I know that this is the right business for me because when I’m behind the camera or I’m creating concepts, I feel a sense of peace and joy.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I certainly have to be honest, and it has not been a smooth road. When I first started the company, I only wanted to work with independent music, artist, and shoot music videos. I was able to work with a local artist exclusively, but as I continued to market myself, I was not gaining clientele, and I felt like I needed to revamp and add more services to work with small businesses. I didn’t really understand social media, I didn’t have an optimized website, I didn’t have a lot of the backend set up that can help a business flow. I just didn’t know what I didn’t know! I also struggled with finances, because I didn’t have the clientele, I had to fund the business from my full-time job.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I think it’s very important to surround yourself with like-minded individuals inside and outside your industry. I would not be here without the help of my mentor, who saw something in me, that I did not see in myself. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there because there is someone out there, looking to pour into you so that you can pour it to someone else when the appropriate time comes.
