Today we’d like to introduce you to David Mason.
Hi David , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began exploring the entertainment and production industry after relocating to Atlanta from Florida in April 2015. Once I settled in Atlanta, I started singing at my local church, The Vision Cathedral of Atlanta. As I grew more acquainted with Atlanta’s gospel scene, I recognized a demand for support in production and for local artists. In November 2015, I established LC Management. Despite launching my own business, I was initially unsure how to navigate the industry or build a network. In 2016, I was fortunate to have Marques Collins of MC Management (now The Marques Collins Collective) from Chicago as my mentor. Under his mentorship, I was appointed A&R Director at MC Management. While networking in this role, several artists approached me for individual assistance. This prompted me to take a leap of faith and create my own brand. In May 2018, LC Management was rebranded as Freedom Management Group. From 2018 to 2023, Freedom Management Group has represented some of Atlanta’s top artists, including Jessica Dinae, B. Chase Williams & Shabach, Antwoin Holman & Trans4mation, among others.
In May 2023, Freedom Management Group evolved beyond just management. It began offering administrative and production logistics/management services. This transition led to the rebranding of Freedom Management Group to The Freedom Group. I have had the privilege of working alongside and sharing the stage with notable figures such as the late Kevin Lemons, Donald Lawrence, Ricky Dillard, James Hall, Le’Andria Johnson, Jarrell White & Friends, Keke Wyatt, San Franklin, Tiunna Lemons & Higher Calling, Hulk Entertainment, and Tiffany Boone, to name a few. Also, The Freedom Group has assisted with major events such as The Stellar Awards, ChoirFest, ChoirsRock, The Kickoff, BlueNote Atlanta, and iElevate Conference. The Freedom Group is now an expanding organization capable of fulfilling the needs of any artist, brand, or company. Additionally, The Freedom Group has established a volunteer team in Atlanta called The Freedom Squad to support any production events that I lead.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Indeed, for the majority, this journey has been quite seamless. Naturally, like any business, there will be certain obstacles or difficulties, but I have successfully navigated through those challenges.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Freedom Group. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My organization, The Freedom Group, focuses on artist consultations and bookings, artist development, artist management, road management, concert production, event planning and coordination, conference planning and coordination, production management, production coordination, and administrative services.
What I take the most pride in is having fulfilled one of my childhood aspirations, which was to establish my own company. What distinguishes me from others is my passion, determination, and humility.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
For individuals embarking on a career in the entertainment management and logistics sector, the most valuable advice is to cultivate robust organizational habits and communication skills from the outset. This aspect of the industry is heavily dependent on details, timing, and coordination. In contrast to creative production roles, management and logistics necessitate the ability to foresee issues before they arise, ensure alignment among various stakeholders, and uphold order when schedules, travel, equipment, or personalities become erratic.
Establishing relationships is crucial — venues, vendors, talent managers, crew members, and transportation providers will form your professional network, and the more effectively you collaborate with them, the more seamless your events or productions will be. Maintain flexibility and a solution-focused mindset, as last-minute adjustments are commonplace, and your ability to remain composed under pressure will distinguish you from others. Develop the capacity to think both in terms of the overarching vision and the minute details; successful managers can grasp the overall flow of an event or production while simultaneously monitoring contracts, budgets, call times, load-ins, and technical requirements.
Always ensure that you document everything in a clear and professional manner — confirmations, schedules, changes, and expectations — as clarity is key to preventing conflicts. Lastly, remain inquisitive and proactive; the more insight you gain into the functioning of each department, the more effective and respected you will become as the individual who keeps everything on track.
