Community Highlights: Meet Dominique Green of The Honest Conversation Counseling Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Green.

Hi Dominique, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After graduating from the illustrious Clark Atlanta University, I embarked on a successful career in corporate America where I led a team of ambitious young professionals — teaching them how to build and operate their own businesses, market themselves, and pursue their personal and professional goals with confidence.

While I loved guiding others toward success, over time I felt burned out and disconnected from my true purpose — counseling. Though I applied many of these leadership and mentoring skills in my role, I wanted to have a deeper impact in people’s lives. So I decided to bet on myself and enrolled in a graduate counseling program.
Not long after, the world shifted; the pandemic hit, I was laid off, and I faced a series of personal challenges that led to a two-year battle with depression. Scared was an understatement. I felt lost most days and even doubted how I could help someone else when I couldn’t even help myself.

One day, it was a struggle to get out of bed and that was the day I created The Honest Conversation page on Instagram. My intention was to create a space for motivational messages to myself in hopes that I could connect with others who were also struggling with their mental health. In the midst of that journey, I sought therapy, reconnected with my faith, finished my counseling program, and felt inspired to advocate about the importance of prioritizing your mental health. What started as a personal outlet soon became a community of connection, healing, and hope.

Through honest reflection, I realized that although we all struggle at times, surrendering to my circumstances was not an option for me. I knew that even in the darkest moments, I have purpose and full access to the life God intended for me to live. Each day, I made it my mission to create a nonjudgmental space for honest reflection, vulnerability, and renewal — not just for myself, but for every person I encountered.

Even in heartache, I found purpose — to help others experience the same mental and emotional freedom that was transforming me in real time. Shortly after, The Honest Conversation Counseling Services was born — a therapeutic space designed to help teens, adults, and couples authentically rediscover themselves and find purpose and meaning, one honest conversation at a time.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Earlier in my career, I faced moments of imposter syndrome and often questioned whether I would be effective as a counselor — a feeling many of us in this field can relate to. Our programs prepare us with evidence-based tools, but real-life sessions are often complex. Sometimes the person sitting across from you is carrying multiple layers of pain, and it isn’t always clear where to begin.

Thankfully, I was blessed with incredible mentors and professional connections who normalized my fear and gave me permission to take up space in my own lane. Every therapist has a unique set of abilities, and when we fully embrace our authenticity, the therapeutic process becomes more organic and impactful. I no longer aspired to be the “perfect” counselor — I simply wanted to be myself. That shift allowed me to show up more present, empathetic, and deeply connected, ensuring the focus always remained on the client.

Balancing my personal and professional life has also come with its challenges. As a therapist, administrative assistant, content creator, creative, and practice owner, there are days when deciding what takes priority can feel overwhelming. A former mentor once told me, “There’s no such thing as balance — only priorities.” That wisdom stuck with me. I’ve learned to identify my non-negotiables — the daily practices that ground me and set the tone for everything else. My faith, fitness journey, self-care, and rest are essential pillars that keep me psychologically fit to hold space for others while continuing to hold space for myself.

We’ve been impressed with The Honest Conversation Counseling Services , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Honest Conversation Counseling Services is a private practice based in Marietta, GA, offering both in-person and virtual therapy. I primarily work with adults and couples, though I hold a special place in my heart for teens ages 15 and up.

In a world where authenticity can sometimes feel like a threat, my mission is to encourage individuals and couples to know their worth, live in their truth, and build a life that feels affirming and healing. Whether it’s a couple striving to reconnect after betrayal or a woman navigating loss and uncertainty about how to heal through her trauma, I aim to serve as the intersection between where you are and where you’re going — through compassion, accountability, and honest conversations.

My therapeutic approach is genuine, relatable, trauma-informed, and culturally competent. While I work with a variety of populations, many of my clients are men and women of color seeking a familiar face — someone who understands the nuanced and layered challenges we often carry. My client’s have often described me as their “professional best friend” because I’ll never judge you but vow to keep it real in the kindest way possible. Regardless of your struggle or heartache, you deserve a safe and supportive space to confront your pain so that it no longer holds you captive.

I’m deeply committed to helping clients understand that mental health challenges are both common and manageable with the right support. My specialties include trauma healing, relationship and marital challenges, self-love and self-exploration, anxiety, depression, stress management, life transitions, spirituality, and nervous system regulation.

I integrate a range of evidence-based modalities tailored to each client’s needs, including Mindfulness, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Reiki Healing, Attachment Work, Parts Work, Gestalt, and Narrative Therapy.

How do you think about happiness?
For me, it all comes down to freedom and community.

I come from a large Jamaican family that has always empowered me to be exactly who I am, regardless of what others might think. It took me some time to fully embrace that in fear of being misunderstood, but once I did, I knew I was home. Freedom, to me, is about owning my power — knowing I’m capable of everything God has planned for me and moving boldly in that truth. It’s such a liberating feeling, and it’s something I intentionally seek in everything I do. I still have those occasional days where I doubt myself but my therapist is right there to remind me of my anchor statement to center me.

My family — especially my loving parents and brothers — also taught me the importance of community. Till this day, we gather for Sunday dinners every week at my parent’s house. It’s a space filled with reggae music, never ending jokes and food, games, dancing, and unconditional support. Our conversations are raw and uncut but the one thing that is always present is love and connection. The way we come together for meals and annual family vacations is truly something special — it’s where my soul feels the happiest.

When I moved to Atlanta to attend Clark Atlanta University, I carried these same values with me. Community remained essential, and I’ve been blessed to find a tribe here that means the world to me. During my two-year battle with depression, it was community that kept me grounded — and there’s incredible power in that.

I also come from a long line of chefs and creatives, so when I’m not in the therapy room, you’ll probably find me in the kitchen crafting something special or behind a camera capturing life’s meaningful moments. The simple pleasures move me most. Every day, I try to live as if I’m writing a love letter to my future self — and I know she’s proud.
