Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Pia L. Scott. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Dr. Pia L. Scott is a Counselor, Speaker, Consultant, Community Servant, and Educator. Early in her career, she knew she wanted to work in a field where she could help people but wasn’t sure which direction to take. Over the course of ten years, she has worked in Human Services, State Government, and Education. While working in higher education for the last nine years, she was ready to grow, learn, and expand her career options. She interviewed for several different roles with no luck and felt that her talents were not being utilized. Dr. Scott was fueled by frustration and stress finding herself questioning if she wanted to work for someone else or herself.

Stepping out on faith, she is now the CEO of the P L Scott Group, LLC. Her company focuses on the 3C’s: Counseling, Coaching, and Consulting. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, she works with individuals, groups, and families to address mental health issues. She is a certified life coach helping people find their purpose and as a consultant she develops continuing education programs training counselors and specialists in the helping profession. Dr. Scott didn’t know it at the time, but she was cultivating a teachable strategy to inspire anyone to become enthusiastic about change, to find their unique power of resilience and their purpose. She is the visionary author of “How I Got Over: The Educational Pursuit of Black Female Scholars” detailing the educational journey of 12 amazing black female scholars. Challenges, obstacles, nor life itself could stop their pursuit. The contributing authors have achieved at great levels to include successfully obtaining degrees such as Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Education, Doctor of Pharmacy, and Doctor of Medicine.

Today, she provides College to Career Workshops for First-Generation and college students. Through a practical and engaging framework, she will show students how they can transform from college to a successful career.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The transition was a constant struggle. Working for someone else became a challenge because I was never able to reach my fullest potential. My work experiences were difficult at times because I was always overqualified but treated as if I was underqualified to do the work. I have been blatantly disrespected by supervisors, peers, etc. I knew that it was time for me to move on and so I started the employment search process once again after three years of being in a toxic workplace culture and harassment. I experienced constant racism even in my job search. I could remember one interview I went on, I was told that I was too young, too black, and female to have accomplished all that I did. My second interview, the interviewer just stared at me as if I was on display. She didn’t say what she was really thinking but I could see it in her demeanor that I was NOT going to get chosen for the opportunity. I researched the individual they did hire and no shock to me, this individual resembled her. I came to a point where I was tired of other people’s perceptions of what “they” though I should be because they had the control or because they felt my accomplishments would overshadow their authority. Most of these experiences came from women. Despite these disappointments, I remember the important people in my life and that I needed to step out on faith and become my own boss. Each struggle I went through, I went through for a reason and that is to inspire people to move in their own way. I remember that one monkey doesn’t stop the show and so I kept moving. Challenges help us grow and change.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
