Community Highlights: Meet Erin Elliott of Elliott Immigration Law

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Elliott.

Hi Erin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in Maryland and was raised by my mother since the age of three. She worked during the day, went to school at night and then eventually started her own accounting business. I remember as a child asking Santa for office supplies, so I think the idea of starting my own business has always been in my blood.

In 2006, I began practicing law in the area of public finance for a national firm. This was right before the market crashed and soon after I started, my finance work halted. Every day the other associates and I would show up at the office not knowing if we still had jobs. It was definitely an interesting way to begin my legal career. This time however allowed me to explore other areas of law, including working with small businesses and start ups. I realized that I was so inspired working with entrepreneurs and grateful for the opportunity to support the realization of their ideas. Around the same time, I also met my husband, who is Turkish. We went through the green card process after we were married and the whole experience piqued my interest in immigration law as well.

After a brief move to London and back to Atlanta, I slowly built my immigration law practice, representing families, businesses and entrepreneurs. In my practice, I am able to have a perfect mix of working with all types of people, cultures and ideas. I love seeing families reunited and business ideas come to life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While I have certainly experienced obstacles with starting a law practice, my biggest struggle has always been my own fear of failure.

When I first started out, I had huge imposter syndrome. It’s difficult starting something on your own because you have to be your own coach, cheerleader and star performer at the same time. Thankfully after 15+ years of my husband’s pep talks and way more wins than losses, I’m confident in my expertise and ability to creatively find immigration solutions for my clients.

As you know, we’re big fans of Elliott Immigration Law. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Elliott Immigration Law is a law firm that provides immigration solutions for individuals, business and entrepreneurs. We focus 50% in family immigration and 50% in employment immigration. We were luck to have Carrie Toth join our firm last year as the managing partner for the family immigration side of the firm. She focuses her practice on family-based green cards, waivers, and citizenship cases.

I manage the employment immigration side of the firm and primarily solve immigration issues for tech companies. This could mean resolving visa issues so that businesses can hire the best talent for their business or assisting entrepreneurs in obtaining necessary visas to set up or expand the business to the U.S.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
The best advice I have is that everything we do is about relationships; relationships with clients, colleagues, vendors, etc. Every relationship brings two separate people together with their own worries, obstacles, history, sacrifices, etc. and we will never fully understand what it means to live anyone else’s life. Recognizing this and being kind is the best business advice I can offer.
