Today we’d like to introduce you to Etoshia McFarland.
Hi Etoshia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m a Licensed Esthetician and spa owner of Faces By Etosh based in Columbia, SC. My early days when I decided to start my own spa business began with my experience as a makeup artist. As a makeup artist, I worked with many women who had skin concerns, which make up only concealed for a limited time. To further help women address their skin concerns and feel confident in the skin they were in, I enrolled in Esthetics school at Kenneth Shuler. After finishing esthetics school, I immediately began pursuing my non-traditional career as an esthetician while working my full-time job as a teacher. I loved esthetics and soared in the field quickly. I opened up a spa studio and later created a skincare line and began teaching skill set and marketing classes to other estheticians to help them in their business, seven years later as a spa owner and esthetics educator, I still love what I do, and have won several awards and recognitions for my business.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a business owner navigating a new field, it’s not always a smooth road. There are many things to learn and understand in business. You can be a master at your craft and very skilled, but you must also consider the logistics. Having a business isn’t just about social media and making a post to get likes and comments. It’s beyond that. It’s understanding logistics, analytics, knowing your profit and loss, marketing, customer service, and so much more. Some struggles I experienced earlier on in my business were establishing access to business funding along with knowing what resources were available to me as a business owner and the overall short-term and long-term vision plan for business growth. I overcame all of these struggles once I sought out a mentor. Having a mentor is key to helping you propel yourself in your business endeavors. An established mentor will help you identify your business goals, help you with strategy, provide effective advice, and help you make connections.

What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is traveling and spending time with family and friends. As a business owner, sometimes you become overworked and forget to live, have fun, and enjoy your success and what you have accomplished. I’m thankful for my journey and the opportunities that have come my way.
