Community Highlights: Meet Greg Lewis of Slums Magazine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Lewis.

Hi Greg, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I studied mass communication with an emphasis in print editorial at Bethune Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida. I graduated with my BA in communications back in 2018. I’ve always had a passion for writing. Growing up, I used to write music, poetry, short stories and more. Something about writing down certain things that came to my mind became an outlet for me. Growing up, I’ve always been really interested in music, fashion & entertainment. Naturally while studying journalism, I felt like working in magazines was the perfect way for me to incorporate everything I love doing all in one. During my sophomore year at BCU, I met a guy name Jaik via Instagram. He had a brand called “Slums Magazine” an advertisement mag that specializes in branding and promotions. He wanted to focus on bringing awareness to underground artists in surrounding areas. To help create a platform for them to share their stories. He brought me on board around 2016 as the Editor and chief of that brand. For seven years, we’ve been working as business partners to help grow Slums into the next big thing in mass media.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has definitely been hard but worth it. Covid-19 took a toll on me and everyone else. Having to quarantine and be separated from humanity really threw me off my game for a little bit. Being stuck in the house kinda put a damper on my creativity, I couldn’t find any new inspiration. Other than that, life always seems to find a way to throw a curveball at you somehow. I try not to let my challenges define me though, I’ve learned threw the years that’s it’s not about the loss, it’s about the lesson.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Slums magazine is an advertising mag that specializes in branding and promotions. At slums, we provide mass media coverage for artists/creatives, business entrepreneurs, and more. Our motto is, “It’s not about where you’re from, it’s about where you’re going.” Slums magazine provides daily content on celebrity news, local news, fashion, sports, public affairs and current events. I am the Editor and Chief over at Slums Magazine. I help develop content and help format our online publication. What sets Slums apart from other magazines is that we actually want to speak for the people. Not just the celebrities that we all admire. We want to speak for your next door neighbor, your colleague, or your classmate. We want to open doors for opportunities and help provide major exposure. My team and I are planning to release our very first physical copies of Slums Magazine this summer on June 22, 2022. I am so far most proud of that. You can receive our online summer publication on June 22, 2022 on issu.com. Physical copies will be sold exclusively on our website, www.Slumsmag.blog.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
In my spare time, when I’m not writing stories for my magazine I love to write music and short stories. I’m planning on writing a book very soon.
