Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabella Doherty
Hi Isabella, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It’s kind of a funny story! Back in college, I was doing eyelash extensions out of my dorm, just figuring things out while working toward my business administration and management degree. My best friend had just landed both an internship and a job offer at two different marketing and PR agencies. She didn’t have time to manage two small business accounts anymore on the side – a hairstylist and a wine tour company – so she asked if I’d be interested in taking over. At first, I declined. Managing my personal account was fun, but I wasn’t sure if it would feel the same for others.
Fast forward a few weeks, and we’re at a winery, a couple of glasses of wine in, and she asks again. This time you can imagine I said, “Why not?” From that point on, I found myself loving the work, and soon enough, I was getting referrals from family, friends, and clients. Eventually, I knew it was time to leave the eyelash extensions behind and dive headfirst into social media management for businesses. It all started with a ‘why not,’ and here I am, fully immersed in the world of social media, helping other small businesses grow.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not a smooth road! One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that not every client is the right fit. It’s tempting to take on everyone who wants to work with you, but I’ve realized through experience – and plenty of mistakes – that you have to be selective. Having a good mentor to turn to when things feel like they’re falling apart has been very valuable, especially as a business owner.
As a business owner, you care the most about your business, so you naturally put the most into it. When something goes wrong, even if it’s an employee’s mistake, you have to take responsibility and apologize. You carry those problems home with you, sometimes losing sleep over them. And when a client leaves, it’s easy to overanalyze what went wrong, what you could have done better. As you grow, you start to let these things roll off more easily, but not letting them affect you at all? That wouldn’t be human.
In this industry – and many others, I’m sure – the key is consistency. Did your reel, the one you spent an hour scripting and recording, flop? Okay, time to pivot. You just keep going.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about LilliBell Digital Marketing?
Although we have “digital marketing” in the name, LilliBell Digital Marketing actually specializes in one thing: social media management. We see a lot of agencies trying to do it all, and often one service shines while the rest fall short. It’s hard to be amazing at ten things, but it’s much easier to be really great at just one. That’s one of the things that sets us apart. We focus on what we know and do best: social media.
Another thing that makes us unique is that we specifically work with small to medium-sized local businesses. Why? Because a small business shouldn’t have to pay big bucks for services they don’t need – which is often what happens when you hire a larger agency. We love working with local businesses because it allows us to meet in person, attend your events, support your business by purchasing from you, and even grab a coffee to chat about your goals and ideas. It’s a personalized, hands-on approach that builds long-term relationships. In fact, many of our clients have been with us for years and have become like family.
So if you’re looking for social media management that feels personal, supportive, and local, that’s exactly what we do!
How do you think about luck?
I don’t believe in “bad luck” because I think there’s always a lesson to be learned from every situation! I do however, absolutely believe that two people have played a major role in my good luck: God and the one and only; my mother. I trust that everything will work out the way it’s supposed to because I know God’s got my back, whether it’s a client I’ll have for years or a client I’ll learn a lesson from. And my mom? She’s my biggest cheerleader. She’s always there when I need to talk things out or get an outside perspective. Plus, she’s not afraid to let business owners know that her daughter is the best social media manager around which goes to show with the handful of clients she has gotten me! With that being said, I’d love to dedicate this article to my mom. Love you mom!
