Today we’d like to introduce you to J. Blake & Nick O’ryan
Hi J. Blake, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
SCRUMPT was founded by J. and Nick, two entrepreneurs with a shared vision for redefining the dessert experience in Atlanta.
J. always had a passion for business, earning a degree in International Business from Campbell University before opening a dessert shop in his hometown of Lumberton, NC. Over the course of eight years, he built a successful brand, but as time passed, he felt he had reached a plateau and began to experience burnout.
During this time, he met Nick at the dessert shop, who was currently running his own hair salon, and the two quickly formed a connection.
Six months into their relationship, they both realized they had outgrown their hometown and had bigger aspirations. They made the bold decision to move to Atlanta, seeking new opportunities. In Atlanta, J. took on a role as General Manager at a well-known bakery, while Nick worked as a video tech (9-5). However, both knew they were meant for more—J. as a businessman and Nick as a full-time content creator.
J., a serial entrepreneur, was ready to step away from the traditional workforce and build something of his own again. Nick, a highly followed digital creator with over a million views on TikTok, had always aspired to turn his passion into a career. Tired of settling for less, they decided to take a leap of faith and launch SCRUMPT, a dessert shop unlike anything Atlanta had seen before, located inside Oak Street Eats.
Both founders bring unique experiences to the business. J. is a six-time business owner and a Food Network star, while Nick is a first-generation college graduate, & previous entrepreneur as well. Their combined drive, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit have positioned SCRUMPT as an exciting new addition to Atlanta’s dessert scene, proving that taking risks and chasing dreams can lead to something extraordinary.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey to launching SCRUMPT has been anything but smooth. J. faced significant challenges as an openly LGBTQ+ business owner in his small, conservative hometown of Lumberton, NC. Determined to create a safe and inclusive space, he hosted monthly drag brunches, giving the community a place to express themselves authentically. However, the backlash was overwhelming. Despite investing thousands of dollars into the community—feeding 5,000 people every year for Thanksgiving, hosting free trunk-or-treat events for children, and organizing a free food truck festival that brought in thousands—the resistance never wavered. The city refused to embrace change, and J. became the target of intense criticism, negative reviews, and even death threats. Rather than being recognized for his generosity and contributions, he was often reduced to his identity. After years of fighting against the opposition, he made the difficult decision to close his business and move on.
Nick has also faced challenges, particularly in growing his presence as a content creator. Success on TikTok didn’t come overnight, but through persistence and authenticity, his southern charm resonated with audiences, helping him build a loyal following where he could live in his truth.
Opening a business in Atlanta came with its own set of obstacles. Nothing worthwhile comes easy, and bringing SCRUMPT to life required immense financial discipline—cutting back on vacations, luxury expenses, and nights out to save and invest in the vision. The process was further complicated by city regulations and unexpected delays, especially when trying to launch during the busy holiday season. Despite the setbacks, patience and perseverance have paid off, and SCRUMPT is now carving out its place in Atlanta’s dessert scene.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At their core, J. and Nick are creatives, artists, and innovators who have brought their vision to life through SCRUMPT. Specializing in mind-blowing desserts, they have mastered the balance of bold, unexpected flavor combinations and classic homemade favorites. From intensely rich red velvet cakes to pound cakes that evoke nostalgia for home-cooked meals at grandma’s house, every dessert is carefully crafted with precision and passion. Baking is an art, and they have perfected the science behind every recipe they sell.
What sets SCRUMPT apart is its commitment to pushing boundaries. Their desserts are unlike anything found elsewhere—both in appearance and taste. The menu features a variety of offerings, including cupcakes, cheesecakes, candy apples, brownies, pound cake slices, cake pops, banana pudding, peach cobbler, and more, with flavors changing monthly to keep customers excited and intrigued.
Two of their standout creations have taken Atlanta by storm. The pickle lemonade, a best-seller, is a one-of-a-kind drink that surprises and delights with its unexpected yet addictive flavor. Meanwhile, the Big Back Cheesecake Cake is a masterpiece—layers of strawberry shortcake and red velvet cake with a rich cheesecake center, creating a dessert experience unlike any other.
Beyond just serving desserts, SCRUMPT is dedicated to creating an unforgettable experience—one that challenges expectations, excites the senses, and leaves a lasting impression. Through their relentless dedication to innovation and their passion for the craft, J. and Nick have built something truly unique in the Atlanta dessert scene.
