Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerrell & Caleb.
Hi Jerrell & Caleb, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
OPNSZN started with Jerrell Lamar and Caleb Seales. We both teamed up to shoot a music video in Atlanta. Jerrell directed while Caleb DP’d the shoot. We decided from there to continue working together. OPNSZN was created and began to thrive. Growing from just us two, we’ve brought on several team members. Starting off with local artists, growing to acts such as J. Cole, Chris Brown, Young Thug (Slat), Nike, Stacey Abrams, Angela Simmons, and more.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Looking back at the journey, there were some slow moments, but that’s for every small business. We took the hits and kept moving. From treatment submissions not being chosen to ideas in the treatments being used by other directors. It’s a part of the game, but we didn’t let that stop us. We ended up getting our work recognized by larger production companies as well as artists and labels. Since then, we’ve moved into the commercial and fashion space. Still a long road ahead. We’ve partnered with the HBUC to provide a space for creatives to really get out their dreams and showcase their uniqueness.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about OPNSZN?
OPNSZN is a production company specializing in visual creativity. We pride ourselves in being able to take a client’s goal and creating an experience out of it. Professionalism is one of our strong suits and we get recognized for the fun environment we create on set. Everyone works well together and can be themselves.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
For those starting out, get out and shoot. Practice your craft, and stay consistent. Perfection comes from repetition and it never results in perfection, but you get so good at it that it becomes second nature to you. I’d also say know your limits and be realistic with yourself, but still challenge yourself… If you want to learn, reach out to people and collaborate with them. Not everything will be a paid gig but look at the value of it. If we could start this all over, I’d make the most out of the opportunities we had early on when we weren’t that knowledgeable. However, the opportunities we missed only led to better opportunities now. Everything happens for a reason.
