Community Highlights: Meet Jessica Waters of J. Miles Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Waters.

Hi Jessica, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in alpharetta and went to Chattahooche high school, then went off to Georgia southern university where I joined Phi mu sorority. I studied interior design at Georgia southern but actually switched over to marketing because the program was a little too in-depth for what I loved to do. (Decorating)

I came back home after graduating and got an amazing job offer from Comcast spotlight(now Effectv) in the TV advertising division. It was a dream job and still is! My corporate job has taught me so much, how to be so confident in what I believe in. You have to believe in yourself and you can sell anything, that is my motto! I became a mother to my precious 3 year old Penelope and we went through IVF 3 times to have her, but she was worth it all. After all this I still had the energy to want to make my dreams comes true and own my own design business!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some of the struggles were just how much time I had to put into this at night and the long days with working a 9 to 5 job as well. I managed, but it was tiring for sure, oh and I also had a newborn!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I have a super fun journey to share with you. I have always loved to decorate and change a room every 3 months, and buy hundreds of throw pillows and now I finally get to do that for other people. I have been in marketing for 13 years and still love my job selling advertising, but 2 years ago I was laying in bed and just said I want to do something fun on the side with my interior decorating skills and I am going to start tomorrow.. ha! I came up with a name that night J, Miles Design and the next morning started a facebook page and instagram page for my business. I literally had no idea how to work the social media world, but I was determined to figure it out. I wanted to start a business to where anyone could use an interior designer, and it be affordable and also all virtual so people could shop on their own time, and when their budget worked for them. So then I just started sharing inspiration I liked and worked on getting my name out there. I got my first client a few days later and the rest was history. I started by hand sketching rooms out for people and sending them a huge list of links to shop from, to know I have my own program I use that I can create a design for someone and they can login into an account and shop their items, make comments etc! Its very fun and very easy. In 2 years, I grew my following from zero to 25k and to say it was hard is an understatement but I work with about 20 clients per month, and I absolutely love my business!!

I am most proud of how many referrals I get from people I have worked with.. I always want to be transparent, and make people happy with what they signed up for.

I am a virtual interior design business and I can work with anyone, anywhere in the country! You send me photos of your space and I create that dream space for you! I do 1 room to a whole house!

I also just came out with my own line of white every room curtains, and pillow cases with my own brand on them!!

What does success mean to you?
Success is staying up late because you are in love with what you do, and never getting tired of the work you are doing! Success is also waking up and feeling good about what you are going to tackle in the day and not dreading it.
