Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Black.
Hi Joshua, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey in numismatics began in May 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 shutdowns, when a simple gift from my grandparents sparked what would soon become a thriving business. They gave me a binder for state quarters, and the process of filling each slot—searching for the highest quality examples I could find—captured my attention immediately. I was fascinated not only by the challenge, but by the history each coin represented.
Recognizing my enthusiasm, my grandparents later entrusted me with part of a collection assembled by my great-grandfather. This collection included older, obsolete designs I had never seen before, as well as stunning 19th-century silver dollars that looked brand new! That collection deepened my interest, transitioning my hobby from casual collecting into a true passion for numismatics.
By June of 2024, my taste in coins had grown more refined, and I realized that the only way to sustainably expand my collection was to apply my growing knowledge in a business context. I purchased my first piece of inventory—a 1921 half dollar—on June 19th, and sold it two days later for a modest $5 profit. While not a large sum, that moment validated my ability to successfully navigate the numismatic industry. It proved that buying and selling coins could be more than a dream; it could be a professional path for me.
To grow and expand my business, I began by assisting dealers in bringing their inventory into coin shows. Not only would they often be willing to share their knowledge and expertise with me, it also allowed me to build connections with dealers from the local to national scale.
Today, at 17, I proudly operate as a professional numismatist and coin dealer, sourcing rare coins for collectors and continuously expanding my expertise. This path has allowed me to travel the country and meet so many wonderful people throughout the industry, from seasoned dealers to passionate collectors. But most importantly, I’ve learned that the true value in numismatics isn’t just the coins—it’s in the stories, the history, and the people who share the passion.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. In the beginning, since I started when I was 15, it was difficult to build a meaningful inventory for customers because I simply didn’t have the capital. I would buy one coin, sell it, and then use those funds to purchase the next. While challenging, that process taught me patience, discipline, and how to make strategic buying decisions rather than impulsive ones. I also had to work to be taken seriously at my age, so I focused on earning trust through knowledge, honesty, and consistency. I spent countless hours studying grading standards, market trends, and historical context so I could speak with confidence and stand behind every coin I offered. In addition to traveling the country to source coins, I’ve also flown across the country on multiple occasions to learn directly from established, experienced professionals—gaining insight from both their successes and their mistakes.
Even now, one of my biggest challenges is balancing school with the business. I’m currently a junior in high school, and academics demand a large portion of my day, even outside of regular class hours. Learning how to manage my time so I can source inventory, communicate with clients, and maintain the high standards I set for my schoolwork is an ongoing challenge, but also one of the most rewarding parts of the journey. It has taught me time management skills I never expected to learn this early in life, and shown me the value of prioritization and balance.
We’ve been impressed with Fanatic Numismatics, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I operate an online numismatics business dedicated to helping collectors—and everyday people—understand, appreciate, and confidently collect coins and currency. My services range from guiding new collectors as they begin their numismatic journey, to assisting families in selling inherited collections, and sourcing rare, historically significant pieces for advanced collectors. I specialize in U.S. coinage from the 1700s through the early 21st century, and also regularly handle modern issues, error coins, Mexican coinage, and banknotes. As a primarily online business with no employees or overhead, I’m able to offer competitive pricing and one-on-one service, ensuring every customer receives personal attention and exceptional value.
The foundation of my brand is integrity. I was taught early on that the only coin you can’t buy for any price is your reputation, and that lesson guides every purchase, sale, and consultation I take on. For example, I’ve turned down coins that were misrepresented, even when it would have been profitable to purchase them, because maintaining trust with my clients is far more important than a single sale. I strive to treat every client with honesty, respect, and transparency—the same way I would want my own family to be treated.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
