Kala Lewis

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Design has always been a huge part of my life. In college, my friends and family often referred me to their loved ones for help with design choices. Whether it was dorm rooms, apartments, or small starter homes, I took pride in making an impact on others in that way. Immediately after earning my BFA in Interior Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), I knew I needed to brand myself. I decided to soft launch my career as an independent interior designer while simultaneously working full-time in various design roles. Although my business had a different name at the time, I loved developing my signature design style while gaining industry experience in a corporate setting.

As time passed, it became increasingly clear that my dream of being an independent designer could become a reality. I completely rebranded my business into Minima and made the big decision to step away from the familiarity of the corporate world. I haven’t looked back since!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As I always say, my journey has been a beautiful learning experience. Managing my own clients while working full-time presented its fair share of challenges. However, during that time, I developed my own calendar system, which I still use today to manage my workload efficiently. This system is the backbone of my business, and without that experience, it wouldn’t exist.

Along the way, I’ve discovered the importance of being comfortable with the uncomfortable to better serve my business and, most importantly, my clients. Even now, I continue to step outside my comfort zone and embrace challenges with a positive mindset so I can keep improving and gaining valuable insights.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Entrepreneurship is a continuous journey of taking calculated risks. From deciding to start your own business to taking steps to ensure its growth, you’re constantly weighing the pros and cons of big decisions. In my opinion, it’s essential to have intentionality and a certain level of confidence behind your choices. There will definitely be moments that require blind leaps of faith, but for the most part, strategy is crucial in decision-making.
