Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Scott.
Hi Kay, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m from Oakland, CA and I moved to Atlanta the summer of 2010. I’ve always been somewhat of a girly girl and tomboy. A balance of both, (I’m a Gemini) I’ve always loved getting my hair done, my nails done and just feeling and looking like a superstar. Everyone who knows me knows I’m going to support a business, so I was buying lashes from a friend back to back. I mean, everyday I was posting In her lashes.
My friends suggested, why don’t I just buy the vendor, or start selling lashes myself and I took their advice. I started looking up vendors, buying vendor lists from other people on Instagram, just doing my research. The girl from who I was buying lashes from ended up selling her vendor and I purchased it. I then got the catalog and started asking the women I worked around what kind of lash styles they liked. I did this for about six months before I actually had the money to purchase lashes. I had a friend make my logo for me, and I started officially selling lashes in May of 2020.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been easy at all! I thought starting a business would be a little hard but it’s so much more to starting your own business besides having good products. Most people don’t know the legalities behind it, good customer service, marketing, etc. I’m still learning. I just applied to get my LLC about a month ago and in doing that, I’ve learned it’s so much more than just having a good product and a flashy Instagram page. I had my heart set on a name, but when I finally waited a year later to get my LLC the name wasn’t available, so I had to restart the process on that, a few times. I went to a pop-up shop and I made 0 sales, and I was so discouraged that I wanted to just stop selling all together. But I realized that it’s not just a straight shot to success. So I took a break and now I’m doing a relaunch so when I come back, I have a website, a business bank account and more insight on how to properly run a business
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I sell 3D mink lashes, and I’m expanding to waist beads and an online boutique with various items. My mink lashes are long-lasting and extremely durable. While most strip lashes might only last a week or two, the quality of my lashes is amazing and they last months with proper care. Almost all of my customers are somewhat mad at me because they only wear my lashes. No other quality matches mine. I’ve slept in mine for 2-3 days and they don’t mess up in shape! They are light, unlike other lashes that make your eyes feel heavy. For ladies who wear lash extensions and want to take a break, they tell me that my lashes look like full sets. I am most proud of the quality of my brand and the fact that I’ve taken the time to really do my research. I look forward to building my brand
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I feel like patience is definitely a big key into having a business. Nothing happens overnight, instead of being into this for the money im really Into the business of just providing quality products and customer service. I love seeing my customer reviews and photos and compliments. It’s what keeps me going. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing and don’t pay attention to everyone else’s path.
