Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsi Summerlin.
Hi Kelsi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So, I am originally from Rome, GA born and raised. Me and my family moved to Kennesaw, GA my last year of high school and later relocated to East Atlanta. After graduating high school, I attended Savannah State University for a year (best time of my life, lol) then later transferred to Clayton State University where I graduated. I have a Bachelors Degree in Business Marking with a minor in Supply Chain Management & I also have a certification in Human Resource Management. It’s crazy that I have all those degrees under my belt and chose to be a Cosmetologist! I never thought I would a hairstylist because I didn’t like it growing up but my mother is a Master Cosmetologist and has been doing hair for 30+ years. I’ve always enjoyed doing my own hair or getting my hair done, as well as all the creative things you can do with your hair. I always said that I would never do hair like my mom, but one day I was at my 9-5 and just randomly decided ima start doing hair. See, in high school and college, I always did my friends and family hair, I just never wanted to make a career out of it. Now me and my mom own a hair salon which is located in Kennesaw, Ga! Also, this year I will be launching my wig line Wigs 4 Warriors which is inspired by my mother who has been battling cancer for the past 13+ years. In my eyes, she is the true definition of a warrior!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road at all. Before I decided to do hair full time, I tried to pursue it a few years back and worked in a salon for a few months and then decided that it wasn’t for me. For me at the time, I just did not have the right mindset and was just so used to getting a steady paycheck. Now a few years later, I would say the process has still been a little rough because I am having to start from the bottom up. I would say I actually enjoy all the ups and downs that I have experienced so for it has molded me into a better and stronger person. Although, I’m just now starting my career the thing that makes the process easier is having my mom by my side as my business partner and #1 supporter!
As you know, we’re big fans of Elise’s Styles and Cuts Salon. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Elise’s Styles and Cuts is a diverse hair salon who specializes in many things. Some of the services we offer are color, loc maintenance, weave, cuts, and protective styles just to name a few. I would say the thing that sets our salon apart from others is our hospitality and our ability to do all ethnicities hair types, and also the fact that we are mother & daughter duo, which seems to be very exciting to our customers. What I am most proud of about my brand is the fact that I was able to open a successful business at such a young age.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Hmmm, this is really a hard question to answer lol, because I have so many. I literally had a brain fart trying to think of my favorite memory. So, I have two younger brothers that are 2 & 3 years younger than me and we are really close. With me being the only girl, I was such a tomboy growing up. One day when my mother was at work and I believe it was winter at the time, me and my brothers decided to turn our house into a park lol. One of my brothers had one of those blow up plastic chair and we decided to use it to slide down our stairs. We slid down the stairs like two people at the time sometimes all three of us was on the share lol and mind you, we are middle and high school at the time so we aren’t little kids. We were having the time of our life, although we kept falling off of the chair lol. In the middle of all of us attempting to slide down the stairs in the chair, my mom had walked in and she just looked at us and laughed, she actually sat there and watched us attempt to kill ourselves lol. This has to be one of my favorite memories because we had so much fun that day!
