Today we’d like to introduce you to LaToya Thurman.
Hi LaToya, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Therapeutic Vibrations LLC, and subsequinty Cymbee’s Conjure Shop, was seeded in 2012 from a desire for liberation and my personal healing journey. During that time I had two major experiences that completely shifted my life trajectory. The first, was being fired from the non-profit hojusing agency that I had worked for for years. After bringing in millions of dollars in revenue, rapidly increasing the organizations productivity, creating programs, and fostering the organizations community relations I was laid off, unexpetedly and without warning. The second thing that happened was I got divorced. I think those two things happening back to back initiated some strange resolve in me. I decided from then on that I would work for myself, that I would never allow any outside force to dictate my financial stability. I also committed to my personal development, which led me to my spiritual journey.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh goodness, nothing about this has been smooth by any means. First of all, there’s already so many challenges of running a small business. Especially the type of business that I manage, a metaphysical supply store. And then there’s the spiritual aspect of it. And spirituality isn’t linear, it’s cyclic with constant ups and downs. And because my business directly reflects my spiritual journey, the two are interconnected which makes the struggle more real sometimes. In term of operations I feel like my struggles have been the same as any small business- surviving the pandemic, shifting as the local economy shifts, and navigating the social and political climate. Also, I learned that I needed to shift during each phase of my business. For example, I went from an online store to having a booth as a flea market to having a 900 square foot store. And I quickly realized that I had no idea how to efficiently run a brick and mortar. It’s way different than having an online store so I’d had to take business development courses, hire consultants, and get with business mentors.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Cymbee’s Conjure Shop is a metaphysical supply store. It is the only spiritual shop in Atlanta that caters specifically to hoodoo practitioners. It it also one of very few spiritual shops that is owned and operated by a hoodoo practitioner and initiate of African Traditional Religions. We specialize in crystals, herbs, and items that are commonly used in the practice of hoodoo but we are most known for our spiritual readings, events, and classes, which range from learning how to make spiritual baths to tarot and plant foraging. What sets us apart is our full range of product knowledge and the fact that we carry a lot of items that can only be found at our store. We also have a business model that focuses on cultivating a reciprocal relationship with our community. As a result we’ve established several community aide programs. I am most proud of the stellar reputation we have, the fact that we have earned the trust of our customers, and the positive relationship we have with our community.
What makes you happy?
Gardening, traveling, and spending time with my loved ones. Gardening keeps me grounded and reminds me of the beauty and abundance of the earth. Traveling gives me an opportunity to explore and allows me to be adventurous. And I find a lot of joy in making memories with the people I love.
