Community Highlights: Meet Lisa Kaufman of SeniorCare Options

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Kaufman.

Lisa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Lisa Kaufman is the Principal at SeniorCare Options of Atlanta, Ltd., which she founded in 2001. She joined the Aging Life Care Association in 2002 and is an Advanced Professional Member and a Fellow of the Leadership Academy.

Lisa has a Master of Science in Recreational Studies. She is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Therapist, a Certified End of Life Doula, holds a Certificate of Gerontology from Kennesaw State University, a PAC Consultant Certification, and is incredibly proud to be a Certified Care Manager. Lisa has recently served on the Board of Directors for the Aging Life Care Association (ALCA). She has served as Southeast Chapter President and as Unit chair for the Atlanta region. She has been on the ALCA Strategic Planning Committee and served often on the ALCA Annual Conference Planning Committee. She has also participated as a past vice president of the ASCNN, the Chair of the Georgia End of Life Doula Alliance, a board member of Ageless Interaction, and was an Ally BBL Leader for the Atlanta Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

In 2017, Lisa trained and became certified as an End of Life Doula to expand on the services she offers clients in the last chapters of their lives.

Lisa has always worked with the elderly, and was introduced to Aging Life (Geriatric) Care Management by her mother, who had a thriving practice in the Chicago area in the 1990’s. Lisa trained with her mother and began her practice in the Metro Atlanta area in 2001.

Additionally, Lisa was a family caregiver for her grandmother during the last year of her life, and experienced the challenges and successes first-hand.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Life is not a smooth road, and building a thriving practice has its own challenges.

The more recent challenges are hiring qualified clinicians who are passionate about this level of client interaction. Additionally, the changes to the Medical System, Medicare and Medicare Advantage programs are frustrating for clients to navigate, and this can limits options presented by Aging Life Care Managers.

As you know, we’re big fans of SeniorCare Options. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The care with which SeniorCare options engages with clients and families is something Lisa is most proud of. Maintaining a high level of professionalism and guidance for clients is one of Lisa’s visions for her practice. The goal is always what is going to provide this client’s quality of life, and how can we promote the best care possible by all the providers involved.

Lisa is passionate about End of Life and strives to support clients to prepare for their End of Life in both practical and spiritual ways, for a positive experience at the most tender of times.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Lisa foresees more and more clinicians turning to Aging Life Care Management as a professional next chapter. Thus broadening access to this level of education and support to individuals and families challenged by the responsibilities of caregiving.
