Community Highlights: Meet Luna K of The House of Luna’s

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luna K.

Hi Luna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved fashion. When I was in elementary school, I used to draw sketches all the time of different styles. The problem I had was that I couldn’t really draw. Even to this day, I can’t really draw unfortunately. That along with the fear of not making money as a fashion designer is what made me give up on my dream of ever going into the fashion industry. I grew up poor, so being able to make money in my career was what was more important to me. From then on, every decision I made regarding my career, was usually centered around money. When I got to college, I started off as a music education major and a Spanish minor. I know band directors don’t make the most money, but at that time, band was something that I was really passionate about, or so I thought. That music education major then turned into a Spanish major, which then turned into an accounting major with a Spanish minor. These were all things that I was good at, however it wasn’t necessarily a passion. A few years later, my passion for fashion started to really make itself apparent in my life again. Like I said before, I grew up struggling so I wasn’t able to really worry about clothes. I couldn’t go shopping that often, and when I did go shopping, it was always hard to find my size or find things that fit me well.

On top of that, I had to stick within a bubble because what I wore would have to last me for years. So I never ventured too far outside of basic clothes and colors. Once I got to college and really began to put on more weight, it began to get even harder to find clothes. The struggle to find clothing that was not only good quality but was also cute is what brought back my passion to want to own a plus-size boutique. Three years later, I met Nubia. She’s an oracle reader and during one of our readings about business, I told her about my idea to start a plus-size clothing boutique. She gave me a lot of insight that added more fuel to my fire and that’s when I became more serious about the idea of my business, The House of Luna’s. However, even then, it took me another few months before I really dived into my business. 2021 was an extremely difficult year for me to say the least, so working towards my boutique was constantly being delayed. However, I am moving full force towards it now.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road. As mentioned before, I was really getting serious about the idea back in 2021, but that was also one of the hardest years I’ve had to deal with. I was constantly moving around, struggling to find a steady job, and I was beginning to feel completely hopeless. However, I went through this period of time when I moved into my first apartment where I was just cutting people off and really zoning in on myself. I was in a very dark place mentally and I was the only one who could really pull myself out of it. I paid complete attention to no one but myself and my mental health. Through that dark period of time spent by myself, with God, and with my Ancestors, I gained a lot of strength. Now, I am working hard day after day to create a brand that is dedicated to making plus-size women feel good regardless of their size.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
So The House of Luna’s is a plus-size boutique that is dedicated to helping women feel beautiful regardless of their size. The goal of my boutique is to offer great quality clothing that comes in extended sizes that are also trendy and cute. I also offer shoes for women who have bigger feet. For some reason, this country likes to exclude women who don’t fit inside this box that they’ve created and I’m here to shine a light on them. I believe plus-size women deserve more than just basic colors and styles. The HOL is bringing not only different styles, but lots of different colors and prints that you won’t be able to find anywhere else. There is something for everyone regardless of their personal style because we keep everyone in mind. When people come to our site, we want everyone to feel as though they can find something for themselves. That is what I’m actually most proud of about my brand. We include everyone, It’s not just for the girly girls, or the preppy girls, or the tomboys. Everyone will be able to find something for themselves.

I’ve recently shut my site down in preparation for the next drop that I do, which will be in winter. So everyone should definitely stay tuned in for that because these are some pieces that you’re definitely going to want to get your hands on.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My resilience is most important to my success. If I had gave up during all of the rough patches I went through, then I wouldn’t be where I am today. If I had let being told that my dream wasn’t possible, I wouldn’t be where I am today. If I had let my past situations stop me, or my depression episodes stop me, I wouldn’t be here. I could get off of track for a few days or even weeks, but I’ll always get back on track. I don’t beat myself up or shame myself anymore. I simply say, ok. Now that we’ve went through that, it’s time to get back in the game. Keeping that mindset is what is continuing to help me push forward and get even closer to my own definition of success.
