Today we’d like to introduce you to Mina Turabi.
Hi Mina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, my family didn’t have much money. Going to a school with little hot water, unpalatable food, and a lack of textbooks, yet 20 school resource officers at all times, started to open my eyes to how policy affects everyday people. I started my policy work in high school, advocating and trying to change school policies. When I got to college in Atlanta, I got involved with the Young Democrats. After the murder of Mike Brown, I learned even more how important it was to actually change policy because we can march as much we want, but till laws change there will be nothing different. I continued community work and worked at different organizations including Everytown, Brady, March for our Lives, RISE, and for GA House democrats.
In 2020, we were in our homes watching the world fall apart. When George Floyd was killed, I got more involved in marching and protesting every day. Still, nothing was changing, my friends and I were being beaten by police, and more families were getting torn apart. There, after the murder of Rashard Brooks, I founded my own lobbying firm, Voice of the People LLC, whose main focus area is to pass legislation around Criminal Justice Reform, Gun Violence Prevention, and Police Brutality. Since then, I have helped craft over 100 pieces of legislation both at the city and state levels. Today, I continue to work as a lobbyist at the state level and as a policy director for City of Atlanta D12 Councilmember Antonio Lewis.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. It is very hard walking into rooms where no one looks like you and many have not had the experience in life to think like you.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Voice of the people LLC is a lobbying firm that specializes in criminal justice reform, gun violence prevention, and police brutality.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
GoodNotes, Trello for organization, and Netflix for relaxing after a day of chaos.
