Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Chavis.
Hi Morgan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Thank you very much for having me! My story begins in Detroit, where I like to say “created the entrepreneur that I am today”. I paint the story of Detroit on a much different canvas than many. When most people hear about Detroit, they think of plight, struggle and poverty but that is not at all the only environment Detroit has to offer! My upbringing on the west side of Detroit is one of the unique experiences watching upper-middle class and upper-class black professionals own homes and raise families. In that, I also watched many of them fund their lifestyles of private golf clubs, luxury vehicles and children in private schools by businesses that they owned. My entrepreneurial spirit came inspired by the many black entrepreneurs I watched around me growing up. At the age of 12, I started my first business, “Morgan’s Mane Styles”. I was also a babysitter equipped with business cards, a landing page online and a host of slogans and statements to set me apart from other babysitters.
In my book, Leap Off The Ladder”, I talk about my early experiences as an entrepreneur and how I knew this path was meant for me. I also discuss the business rollercoaster ride I took to discover that this is what I want to do with my life. Though I knew business ownership was a part of me, I did not know how to get there and I had many internal battles to discover this. My story is one of determination, grit and doing things my own way! I transitioned from corporate America to entrepreneurship on a self-funded journey to be a BOSS! My business began humbly as one, brick and mortar hair salon, Lusso Salon in Portsmouth, Virginia and has now grown to a powerful brand of multiple businesses, a non-profit organization, Lusso Gives, and a host of professional services in inspiring other entrepreneurs through business coaching and motivational speaking.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As I fast forward to today, it has taken my exit from a six-figure corporate career as well as many peaks and valleys as a business owner to learn that in addition to struggling with ordering my steps to become an entrepreneur, I also struggled with feeling empowered as a woman in business. In my aforementioned experience as a child, I described men who I looked up to as business owners. It was not as prevalent in my exposure at that time that I was able to recognize the many successful women who were business owners around me as well. They were there but overshadowed by the majority being men. This revelation was my first conscious acknowledgment of the inception of my biggest challenge as a CEO being my internal battle with imposter syndrome. Now as I have focused my career on not only inspiring other women to pursue their own paths as I have but empowering them, I speak openly about how I address and attack the appearances of imposter syndrome in my life in an effort to provide tools for other women to put the syndrome to rest! Leap Off The Ladder discusses some of my biggest challenges and how I overcame them. Print and eBook copies of Leap Off The Ladder are available on www.thelussobrand.com.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned as the CEO of The Lusso Brand is to be strategic in spending. After diligently working to save startup funds for my business, I wanted to ensure everything was perfect! In doing so, I overspent on initial expenses that could have waited until the business was earning revenue. This has taught me to rightsize my lens from the page! As CEOs, we cannot read too close to the page because we will miss the bigger picture. We also cannot read too close to the page because we will miss details. We have to be at the right distance in order to have a long-term, high-level scope yet still be detailed to enough for strategic planning. The Lusso Brand aids other business owners in creating these plans for their businesses.
