Today we’d like to introduce you to Paola Chavarro.
Hi Paola, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Bogota, Colombia. I come from a very loving family where I was the oldest of three sisters. Twenty years ago I came to the United States for a master’s degree in American Law and ended up staying in the U.S. After finishing my master’s degree, I started working for a small law firm in Atlanta, GA and as a paralegal in the area of immigration law.
After that, I obtained my attorney license and started practicing immigration law in 2009. I worked for a medium-sized law firm in Atlanta for a couple of years and I gained very valuable experience. In 2012 I decided to start my own law practice because I wanted to do things my own way. I really wanted to offer a more personable treatment to my clients because being an immigrant myself I know how stressful an immigration process can be. In my practice, I can truly devote my time and energy to helping immigrants in a professional manner but making sure that they feel accompanied at every step of their process.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I graduated from law school in Bogota, Colombia and decided to get my master’s degree in the U.S. I was always told that a foreign attorney would never be able to practice law in another country because the laws of every country are very different and it would be very difficult to pass the exams to get a law license in the U.S. I was basically told that if I decided to stay in the U.S. I’d have to look for something else to do. Fortunately, I didn’t let those beliefs stop me from becoming a lawyer in the U.S. and after a lot of effort and sleepless nights I was able to get my law license in January 2009. Also, since I decided to start my own practice, the road has been very challenging because I have had to learn how to manage a business as I go. In law school, I was never taught how to manage employees, finances, accounting or any of the skills that you need to effectively manage a business, so I have made my share of costly mistakes that have taught me in a hard but effective way the dos and don’ts of managing a business, although I still have a lot to learn.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
