Today we’d like to introduce you to Roxanne Dixon.
Hi Roxanne, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina devasted New Orleans, Louisiana and I was forced to evacuate with my then 12-year-old daughter to another location. Since we had never visited Atlanta, we decided to travel here because in our minds we thought we would be returning back to New Orleans in a few days. Unbeknownst to us, the levies broke and what should have been a few days away from home turned into 15 years in a new environment with no family, no friends, no home, and no way of sustaining life. BUT GOD! Because of my faith, God placed strangers in my life that supported and encouraged me to get on my feet and start the next chapter of my life. When I knew Atlanta would be my home, my first order of business was to secure employment. Thankfully, I am an educator; so, acquiring a position was not difficult.
Fortunately, the wonderful people that I met as an educator opened doors and friendships that will be with me for a lifetime. After securing my teaching assignment, I then secured a church home. Hearing God’s promises was very instrumental in me being confident that I could rebuild and start again. From there, I enrolled in school and received my Specialist degree and then a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. I began to get promoted on my job, moving up the ranks from being a teacher to now a Principal of my own school. Life was going very well for me as it relates to my career and rebuilding; however, I still suffered with sadness and a sense of not operating in the purpose that God called me for. I was going through the motions but in my spirit, I knew I was destined for something greater. The question was, what was it and how will it manifest? Then, COVID-19 devastated our world. We were all quarantined and I had nothing else to do but listen to what God was saying and penning it to my paper.
As I listened and I wrote, the more I could hear the words “BE FREE BE YOU.” What birthed from me sitting and listening was my self-published book “BE FREE BE YOU 21 Letters to a Beautiful and Godly Lady”. The premise of the book is twenty-one transparent letters I have written to Beautiful and Godly Ladies all over the world. I share the emotions and experiences I have encountered in my life; how I didn’t allow them to tear me down but build me up through God’s leading to know that I am created for purpose and I have a voice in this world. After writing the book, God then led me to create the BE FREE BE YOU sweatshirt line, allowing people to represent who they are through meaningful attire. I also launched the BE FREE BE YOU Life Coaching Program for women that have been displaced physically or displaced in their thoughts and want to flow in their purpose but need support getting to that place. These last fifteen years have been quite a journey for me. What initially started off to be traumatic ended up being triumphant and I am grateful for the ride.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Relocating from another city and starting over with no family and friends was definitely challenging. Initially, it was very lonely; but, I am so very grateful for the people that would invite us into their homes for holidays or to celebrate our birthdays just so my daughter and I wouldn’t be alone. I truly believe that God orchestrated my steps because every time I was low on money or needed encouragement, someone came along and provided just what I needed at that time.
Along the journey, I would definitely be remised if I did not acknowledge my church family, Destiny Christian Center International and our Bishop Glenn B. Allen, Sr. They adopted us and welcomed us not just into their church family but also into their personal families. Having that comradery was the support I needed when I decided to return back to school for my doctorate degree and when I decided to become an entrepreneur. If I had to surmise the biggest struggle of my journey, I would capture it in one word…FEAR. The fear of not knowing how things will happen and the fear of not knowing if I would be accepted. I grappled with a myriad of fear and anxiety, but when I released it to God and decided to trust in Him, I felt peace and comfort, knowing that everything would be okay. And as promised, everything is okay, even when it does not appear to be okay.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
DR. ROX LLC is the parent company of the Beautiful and Godly Lady #B.A.G. Lady Movement specializing in women’s conferences and motivational speaking. I operate from a ministry of encouragement and my goal in life is to reach as many people as I can by sharing my testimony and walking them through the process of getting to where God has ordained them to be. There are many people in this world doing the same things that I am doing, but I am fully persuaded that I have been anointed and gifted to reach women that feel they have been placed in a proverbial box of society’s standards and are ready to be released from the bondage of fear, rejection, and opinions of others. Having the courage and tenacity to write my self-published book BE FREE BE YOU 21 Letters to a Beautiful and Godly Lady is my greatest accomplishment. It opens the door of self-reflection, healing, and encouragement to know that our past mistakes, disappointments, and failures are not who we are. Those trepidations are the things that God uses to make us who He wants us to be. My goal and my mission in this life is to encourage everyone to BE FREE BE YOU.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I would like to encourage every reader that regardless of where they are in their journey, don’t stop. The greatest thing anyone could ever do is “just start.” God delights in us starting and the outcomes belong to Him. We are all created for a purpose and our goal in life is to operate in that purpose because there are people that are relying on us to get them to the next chapter of their lives. There is no failure in trying. The only failure is when we don’t start.
