Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaniqua Johnson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was raised in Bainbridge, GA. I completed Cosmetology school and after set out to pursue a dual license for massage and Esthiology at Aveda Institute. Once I completed that, I moved to Orlando and worked as a massage therapist for 4.5 years and esthetician for TWO years. I decided to start my own massage business on the side while I work full time as a salon assistant. Which then allowed me to get back into using my hair license. After about 1.5, I decided to move to Atlanta where I began my journey as a natural hairstylist.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, but it hasn’t been the worst. I had enough faith and understood that everything happens for a reason and sometimes now on my time and how I want it. I lost my apartment and had to sleep in my car for a little while and just dealing with losses as I discovered myself as an entrepreneur. Life happened, I lost family along the way and that really is what really pushed me. This helped me understand my why.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Peach and Umber is a natural hair salon that offers natural haircare products, specialized regimens and lifestyle products. I believe that our hair, body and soul all connected to our way of being confident and represent who we are. Peach and Umber was formed with my family in mind. I was blessed to know my great-grandmothers, grandmothers, and mother. The women in my life played a huge part in my awareness to my hair and self-care. Peach and Umber represent the love of roots, spirituality and the connection to our hair and beauty. I teach individuals who want to wear the natural hair or are having trouble choosing styles and products that work specifically with their hair. I show them how to style and manage their hair in the natural state. It’s fun to see their personalities based on the types of styles my clients choose to wear.
