Community Highlights: Meet Stacey Wright of Perspectives Center for Holistic Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacey Wright.

Hi Stacey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My business today is very different from where I started out and spend most of my career. I hopscotched in interests and passions from journalism and writing to a degree in computer science from UGA. Coding and communication skills carried me through a long career in the corporate world and consulting, landing in project and program management with large projects, working with companies BearingPoint and Blackboard for government clients and major universities. Along the way, I picked up my MBA from NYU Stern while I was living in Manhattan.

The travel and long hours lost their appeal and were no longer a fit after starting a family. Today I have a 12-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son. When they were babies, I moved into entrepreneurship and freelance work. I started my company, Wright Creative Labs, LLC, and was able to move more freely into the work I was interested in and with a flexible schedule. The work ran the gamut, including things such as tech consulting, building e-commerce websites, and creative pursuits like woodworking.

When my kids got a little bit older, I realized that I hadn’t yet found that right balance for the work I wanted to do — work that was exciting and challenging, allowed me flexibility, and also fed my soul. As part of my own adult life and journey of motherhood, I benefited from counseling. I was wary at first, coming from a family and background where psychotherapy and counseling were not the norm. The more I learned about myself, psychology, and the overall field of mental health, I realized this was the career I wanted to pursue for the next phase of my life. The Mercer graduate program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling was a great experience. I was fortunate to complete my clinical internship at Perspectives Center for Holistic Therapy, a private practice with offices in Tucker and Roswell.

Today, I work as a psychotherapist and Director of Operations at Perspectives, a balance that allows me to bring my mixture of skills, creativity, and interest to my work and to help grow and manage the practice.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have certainly been struggles and I like to think that all of those experiences help me be a better therapist. For example, moms dealing with postpartum anxiety, breaking the cycle of perfectionism, highly sensitive persons feeling out of place, those working through with negative experiences with religion. Counseling is one field where the breadth and depth of my previous experiences have only served to strengthen and deepen my capacity for empathy and connection. In this work, I am of course still learning new lessons and expanding my expertise. I have had to learn in a new way the importance of self-care and boundaries.

As healers, we can only show up fully for our clients if we are taking care of ourselves and not burning out. I’ve also had to work on replacing old stories of perfectionism and achievement, realizing that my true, authentic self, is enough. Like others, there is also the ongoing struggle for balance — finding time for work, my kids, my husband, and for myself.

Of course, working navigating a pandemic was also a challenge on multiple levels. I never would have guessed that I would be doing therapy online! Now it is a convenient and effective option for so many clients. It allows for greater flexibility of scheduling, and I can see clients anywhere in Georgia. I still see some clients in person at our Tucker office, but most of my clients are online and we meet regularly on Zoom.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Perspectives Center for Holistic Therapy?
As a holistic therapy practice, Perspectives provides a range of services to support families, couples, groups, and individuals. We are unique in our approach of serving the whole person from a strengths-based approach. Our team includes psychotherapists, speech-language pathologists, coaches, and progressive therapies such as energy healing. The diversity of our experiences and specializations is a source of strength and we take a team approach.

I’m particularly proud of our partnership with The Powerful Project, a local non-profit that works to extend access to therapy services to families to families that cannot afford the services they may desperately need. Through this program and our clinician training program, we are able to give back to the community.

As a part of the leadership team, I’m excited to bring my business background to bear and work to expand our offerings to clients and professionals. Our team members continue to expand their knowledge and expertise and we’re proud to now offer trauma therapy (EMDR and BrainSpotting), sex and relationship therapy, therapy for leaders and executives. I myself focus on seeing highly sensitive persons (HSPs), moms of all ages and stages, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and couples.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Great question. The first answer that comes to mind is authenticity. At this stage in my life asking that very question, “why?,” about a lot of my personal choices and how I am living my life. I may or may not have a choice or the ability to control a situation or outcome, but I can certainly entertain the question. I want to live a life that is intentional and not just on autopilot or living by old rules or stories that no longer fit who I am (or perhaps they never did)? I love to work with clients from this perspective as well. Mindfulness and acceptance are key tools in this ongoing work.
