Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryann Brown, Esq. and Osebolulu “Ose” Omo-Abu, Esq.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The Numbers Law Firm started as an idea between my business partner, Ose and I to push a tax niche through our own law firm. After earning our law degrees, we met at The University of Florida where we earned our Tax LLM. We both had a mutual love for small business ownership within our community so, we joined together to teach about entrepreneurship and resources from a legal perspective.
When we looked around at other law firms who targeted entrepreneurs, we noticed that the main focus was to start a brand and protect that brand, but no one was talking about the before and after of that process. What good is a trademark without a team or a CEO without a solid cash flow?
Ose and I knew that by taking the unpopular conversation of taxes and resources into the entrepreneurial space, we could make a huge difference for entrepreneurs we were meeting in school, and most importantly, entrepreneurs we had grown to know and love within our community.
Today we are two minority entrepreneurs breaking into a non-minority space and it feels amazing. We currently offer business formation, trademark and copyright registration, tax resolution, custom contracts, and in-house counsel services. Additionally, we are teaching our clients and community about concepts that can protect the information they share on the front end of their brand while ensuring the systems they incorporate on the backend are legally compliant.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all! Bringing in clients and getting them interested in our niche was one of the hardest parts of starting our brand. We had immediately assumed that because our services were important, our clients would automatically be ready to get on board.
Two essential things we skipped were how to educate our customers on “why” our services were important and how to market that information in a way that was fun, engaging and fresh. We made several pivots and shifts in how we spent our business income.
Another big mistake we made was paying ourselves way too much too quickly. Your business is like a baby and before you can start planning for a bigger paycheck, you have to start planning for a bigger team. At this point in our business, we invest heavily into our team structure and marketing resources to make sure we are growing the brand before we worry about profiting from it. We’ve also incorporated this lesson into one of our core marketing strategies: legal branding. The legal branding process combines a unique brand front end with a strong business backend to ensure company success.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Numbers Law Firm, PLLC?
What sets our brand apart from your average law firm is our small business perspective. A small business is just a team and marketing strategy away from becoming a corporation; so, why not treat it like that from the beginning? Don’t count yourself out about how big you have the potential to become.
A lot of small business owners think in the now, which results in them being crushed by later events. Our firm communicates with our clients in a language they can understand. They don’t want to learn about the ins and outs of the trademark process; they want to learn about how they can benefit in their business by having a trademark. They could care less about all of the business entity options that exist in the world; they want to know which entity option works for them and why. Too many law firms try to educate their customers on the trade instead of educating them through the experience.
We collaborate with small business owners and legal specialists, regularly, who share our passion for growth and facilitate conversations that teach our community about their potential for more. These are real people with real numbers giving real advice on how to run a small business. In each conversation, we are able to make the connection on why legal teams are needed in these processes because a business is a legal entity. Three things happen as a result of this business model: we’re able to share small business experiences, help our community to visualize team expansion and create a larger network of like-minded individuals who want to scale their businesses!
