Community Highlights: Meet Tia Anderson of Anderson & Associates

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tia Anderson.

Tia Anderson

Hi Tia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Early on in my career, someone invested in me, that changed my life. This made me realize I could be a female, minority legal leader—and a proud parent at the same time. Now, I’m giving back by working with interns and mentees, setting the stage for them, and providing guidance and advice at every opportunity. This helps realize their potential and navigate down the career path best for them, their skills, and their passion. As the head of business and legal affairs at Swirl Films, I also see the company similarly investing in people, internally and externally. The company is constantly providing a platform for movies and people to have a voice.

Born and raised in Toronto, attending the University of Toronto, I moved to Atlanta for my law degree. In law school, I only knew I wanted to do contract law, but had no idea what that looked like. Throughout law school, I grew concerned that this was not for me, a young mom of two. I met a woman who changed my life. I worked with her in entertainment law and learned so much from her and throughout that journey fell in love with entertainment law. Now, I try to provide that comfort to other young women of color.

My success grew quite rapidly but with much hard work. In a short period of time, I was able to grow my own firm that employs four other young women and I am the head of Business and Legal affairs of an amazing production company.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not. My life was never smooth, growing up as a child of immigrants who were also trying to figure it all out. I have faced many challenges in life that God has gotten me through and I like sharing my testimony with my mentees, interns or employees so they too can feel heard and empowered. I went to law school later in life, at 28, having two kids throughout the process. Nothing easy about that.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are an entertainment law firm, that specializes in production legal. We can handle a project from its inception, when it is just an idea, to when it is on the screen. I am most proud of our white glove service and the extremely organized processes that I have created throughout time. We truly are “Behind The Scenes” on every aspect, behind our clients to support them every step of the way.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I believe in taking calculated risks; I took one on myself by starting my own firm, but I also had a plan. Although I was scared and originally had no plans start my own firm, with the encouragement of others, I did it and do not regret it one bit. You need to take risks in order to see some serious great rewards, but I believe you also need to have a good plan and be ready to work hard towards it. Nothing good comes easy.
