Community Highlights: Meet Trevon Chester of Mustahfahs Barber and Beauty Shop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trevon Chester.

Hi Trevon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m originally from Detroit, MI and moved to Atlanta in 2012. I was 23 and married with two children at the time when I made the choice to leave my hometown and start a better life. When I first moved to Atlanta, I was working for a moving company for two years but that ended when I suffered a back injury. I was at a crossroads in my life but knew where I was in life was not my final stop. So I enrolled in barber school after figuring out how to best utilize my talents. Was accepted and began my journey in 2014. After six years of cutting hair and a pandemic, I was finally at a place in my life where I was ready to go from worker to owner so in 2021, I made the big leap. It has been a very beneficial decision for my life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been smooth sailings. Going into business for myself and with a limited skill set in the beginning meant my customer retention was bad. My customer service was not as good as I thought it was when compared to working for a corporation. So all these things had to improve in order for me to be at the level I am today. I’ve been homeless, suffered through a divorce, having my youngest child while in the beginning phase of my new career (she spent many days with me at work). But all of these adversities made me into the man I am today. I have taken many losses but my gains have out weighted them so here I am today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Mustahfahs Barber and Beauty Shop?
We are located on the westside of Atlanta in a predominantly black neighborhood. The area has a rich history and our clients make sure to let us know all about it. We offer our clients personal space so that everyone feels comfortable waiting inside the shop. We specialize in men’s cuts, women’s cuts, beards, locs, facials, and many more. We are a growing brand with opportunities to help those in our community.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The quality I feel is most important to my success is consistency. Being able to maintain what I’ve built up for myself, my family, and business so it not only benefits us now but also in the not too distant future. Our clients receive the same great service every time they come into the shop whether it’s every two weeks or once a month. We want our customer’s experience to be enjoyable and consistent.
