Today we’d like to introduce you to Tylon Watford.
Hi Tylon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My business actually started from notes on my iPhone. The original concept was a playlist, it was supposed to be a collection of thoughts and songs based on how we felt. This came from a conversation my line brother and I had about how as black men, we have no avenue to express how we feel. After about 3 or 4 months of notes, we started making clothing and turned the whole thing into a clothing brand based around mental health. Our primary focus was adverse childhood experiences and how they effect us later in life. Our brand, The Sad Boy Saga, is our way of telling and highlighting mental health issues that are often ignored in the black community. This can look like any of us and we didn’t want to exclude any part of our community from being represented. We wanted to make fashionable clothes with a strong foundation and purpose for existing.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been easy, but that’s been the most enjoyable part about the journey so far. Since the pandemic hit its pushed back a lot of in-person interaction and branding. It forced us to be strictly virtual, especially at the beginning of the lockdown. Its actually funny how all of this happened, I used to always pray to God and ask him to make me a millionaire but not for the money I wanted the experiences and lessons learned on the way. When I was in college, my focus was engineering but God wanted something else for me, I guess. I faced criticism, people laughed at the concept of my brand. The closest people to me couldn’t see what I had envisioned mentally this was a fork in the road. Because I had to learn how to not seek the approval from others, I had to stop comparing where I was in life to my peers. This journey has really been about finding out who I am and what I’m capable of.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a conscious luxury streetwear brand that encourages customers to express themselves through clothing that relates to their everyday mental health, instilling the importance of self-love, finding yourself, and spiritual awakening/enlightenment. The SadBoy Saga is a safe space and an outlet for people to freely express their emotions, as we advocate for the acceptance of vulnerability and embracing your everyday emotions. In essence, our mission is to tell our story of how we reached better days and created a better reality for ourselves. By us doing this, we hope to inspire and influence many others to tell their stories also! We are most proud of the feedback that we get from our customers and the stories that they share with us about their battles.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The most important lesson has to be never stop hustling, it’s all about critical thinking and action. The crisis has only made me better and more resourceful than ever.
