Today we’d like to introduce you to Vedant Pradeep.
Hi Vedant, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a kid, I was always a fan of comics, especially superhero comics. When I got older, I asked myself, what if you put Bruce Wayne in the desert? What are the conditions necessary to tap into one’s fullest potential? The common trend in these comics is that every hero needs someone or something to give them everything they need to succeed, whether it’s information or personal guidance.
I wanted to bring this concept to the masses, giving people everything they needed to become their best without the million-dollar price tag. From the beginning, that was the vision behind my company, Reframe.
However, I needed a place to start, a problem to which I could offer the solution. I started thinking about OCD, since that’s something I struggle with. However, OCD comes in many unique forms and often changes over time, so I decided to pivot. I knew that OCD is associated with higher levels of alcohol use, and that’s when the idea became clear. If you’re trying to cut back on or quit alcohol, the options are severely limited, and many of these options are stigmatic. Reframe could be a safe space for people worldwide to learn about alcohol, discover a supportive community, and successfully cut back on or quit drinking. I aimed to equip users with everything they could need, all in one app.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When building Reframe, we were faced with a ton of challenges, and we made a lot of mistakes. Everything we thought we knew didn’t work, and we had to try out hundreds of iterations before finally building something that people really needed. We knew there was a problem, but we needed to fight to find the right solution.
The Reframe app started as an “I have a craving” button, built on the concept of cognitive interference. If someone were experiencing a craving, they would tap the button and be met with distractions to get them through. It was supposed to cut their cravings short. However, though this was a science-backed theory, this technique didn’t work.
Next, we decided we could teach people instead. We built a program to help them understand alcohol and its underlying methods. Some people didn’t use the program at all, and others got through the whole thing in one day. We figured it didn’t work out because users had to figure out the pacing independently.
So, we started pacing it out for them, creating a day-by-day program. We listened to our users and got into their heads, discovering what would be relevant and useful for them while maintaining a strong focus on the science behind alcohol.
As you know, we’re big fans of Reframe. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Reframe: Drink Less & Thrive is the #1 alcohol reduction app, built to help you cut back on alcohol and discover a happier, healthier you. With a core 160-day, evidence-based education program, progress tracking, a supportive community, and a multitude of tools, you’ve got everything you need to change your relationship with alcohol at the click of a button.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
My takeaway from all my failures is that the user comes first. When creating an app and building a company, things tend to get cloudy – my focus was constantly being pulled in a million directions, from funding to marketing to efficacy. However, everything changed when I realized that what mattered most was the value Reframe itself provides to the users.
Reframe: Drink Less & Thrive is just the beginning. In the future, we aim to offer end-to-end lifestyle management, including services for nutrition, exercise, relationships, careers, and much more. It’s all about helping people discover their fullest potential and equipping them with the tools they need to reach it.
Today, the Reframe team consists of 20 employees who each individually, care about our mission. We listen to our users and work tirelessly to give them what they need to become their happiest, healthiest selves. As long as we stay true to our mission to give our users everything they need to succeed, I have absolutely no doubt that we will continue to learn, grow, and become the best we can be.
