Community Highlights: Meet Victoria Phillips of The Whimsy Merchant

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Phillips.

Hi Victoria, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started creating whimsical handmade goods as gifts for friends and family. I have always had a passion to create. My work ranges from handmade jewelry to fine art and more. I am a full-time public school art teacher, part-time assistant professor, and a professional artist. I received my B.A. in Visual Art from Lee University and my M.F.A. in Painting from SCAD and I earned my teaching certification and gifted endorsement at Piedmont College.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s definitely not a smooth road being an artist or an art teacher. I have a strong studio practice but teaching all day can be extremely exhausting, especially during a pandemic. I think the toughest thing has been balancing work, life, and my professional work as an artist.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am a professional artist; however, The Whimsy Merchant is under my gallery, Victoria Phillips Studio and Gallery. Having The Whimsy Merchant separate from the gallery allows me a little more freedom with my creations and functional art. In addition, it provides patrons with options that may be more affordable than a large painting but that is still authentic and made by me. I think that is really what sets The Whimsy Merchant apart. I am proud that my brand is growing and that I will be expanding into clothing options soon. I want readers to know that I love creating things for them to enjoy.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Don’t give up! It may seem hard but it is worth it! Also, dismiss the negative energy and opinions of others. Many people may not support you and that’s okay. Continue reaching for your dreams!
