Conversations with the Inspiring Cathryn “Nevada Blue” McDaniel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cathryn “Nevada Blue” McDaniel.

Cathryn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I came out of the womb fascinated by hair. It’s my first love. You can manipulate hair, thus transforming it into a work of art. I knew no matter the capacity that hair would be my medium and I would forever be the artist. I decided to go against the grain, leave college in 2001, and start cosmetology school. The BEST decision I ever made! Once I made the decision, life began to question “are you sure?” I missed the September start date and had to wait a year before starting cosmetology school. Then, since I was employed full-time I could only attend the evening program which lasted two years. Every time life asked, “are you sure?” I confidently answered back “YES!” The knowledge and work came so naturally that it confirmed I was doing what I was designed to do. I was on a quest for knowledge and that lead me to Van Michael Salon. Their advanced color education is by far the best. It has allowed me to become the hair colorist I am today. Through my journey, I’ve realized my heart becomes full when I share knowledge and help people reach their potential. This leads me to become apart of the Van Michael color education team. The joy that comes when you see a student “get it” is beyond amazing. I use that same education to teach my clients about their hair and color goals.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I wouldn’t necessarily say my journey has been smooth. I learned along the way to step out of my comfort zone in order to learn, evolve, and ascend to new heights. I was scared of change for many years of my career. Enough was enough. I decided to start saying yes to new experiences, new perspectives, and living life to the fullest. That lead me to travel to take classes, participating in photo shoots, and becoming a hair color educator with Van Michael Salon. I feel more fulfilled in this phase in my life than at the beginning of my career. My advice to anyone starting their journey is to say yes. You’ll gain plenty of wisdom and worst case a crazy story.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a hair color specialist and am known for working with all textures of hair. One type of hair is no better than another. They are all awesome and require different types of TLC. When working with hair color I am considering eye color, skin tone, hair texture, and lifestyle. I am known for attention to detail and my passion is working with unconventional hair colors and shapes. I manufacture confidence in and of style.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I feel stereotypes is the biggest barrier for women in leadership. Compared to men, we are seen as weak, submissive, and emotional creatures. We are far from that. We are powerful in action dynamic beings. Unyielding and determined to change the narrative of being meek. Our confidence allows us to be steadfast in our beliefs and goals. We have to work twice as hard to be seen as these, but still get backlash for doing these things in a professional way.
