Conversations with the Inspiring DJ MoJo

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ MoJo’.

“Purveyor of feel-good vibes, in a judgment-free, take your shoes off type of musical atmosphere.”

That’s how MoJo’ describes herself as a DJ. Never afraid to go too deep, her emotive musical selections are her own therapy. Having grown up in her father’s studio (Mountain Sounds & Vision, USVI), she was exposed to a combination of genres, to include reggae, soca, hip hop, and soul music… all which became infused with her own love for calypso, afro-beat, electronic, and pop music. MoJo’ ended up with quite a mixed spectrum of musical influence. Today, this translates into sets where she picks apart and infuses together all the pieces of this music that she loves best.

“Two years ago, I hit rock bottom and music was the only thing that made sense to me. I’m a firm believer that if something brings you happiness, you pursue it. Now, I’m DJ MoJo’ and nothing in life is senseless!”

Has it been a smooth road?
No matter the career path, being your own boss is NEVER easy! Especially when placed in an industry that is dominated by men. I’m my own manager, creative director, DJ, music producer, accountant, booking agent, hairstylist, MUA… you name it and I DO IT! Some days I do feel like giving up, but lucky for me, I was raised in a small family-owned business, where my parents instilled qualities of aggression in my siblings and I. My dad constantly reminded me that once prepared, be a LEADER over a FOLLOWER! In these same aggressive qualities, he has stressed the importance of NOT taking no for an answer. So ladies… be your own boss and embody EVERY aspect of your passion FIRST. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be in every right to claim your price, terms, and most importantly your RESPECT!!!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into MoJo’ VIbes Entertainment story. Tell us more about it.
I am a mobile entertainer hat travels locally and internationally. I utilize my business, “MoJo’ VIbes Entertainment” to promote my hashtags #SheGotDatMoJo, #HeGotDatMoJo, and #ItsVIbes, which gives the world a reminder that self- love and self- confidence is extremely important to mental health and stability. I perform at an eclectic group of venues to include nightclubs, Caribbean carnivals and special events. My love for music goes beyond the spectrum of mixing tunes.

As an upcoming music producer, manager and fire dancer, I have found another way to express myself musically and overall artistically.  I produce my own mash-ups that pair seamlessly with artistic fire dancing videos of myself. I have been working tirelessly in growing my business (MVEnt.), as I believe that a true entertainer and lover of the arts explores and expresses through many forms. My experiences in dance and fitness has always gone hand in hand. With experience ranging from age 5 at Music in Motion Dance Academy, U.S.V.I, age 14 at the St. Croix Educational Complex High School Marching Band Dance Squad, being a dancer in the University of the District of Columbia’s Basketball Dance Team at age 19, and at 22 years of age, a Certified Command Fitness Leader in the United States Navy/ NASM certified, I have decided to take my love for dance and fitness and merge it with my passion for music through the birth of a chapter in my company called Lit Fit STX.

Lit Fit STX is a fun, energetic, modern, and carib-hiphop styled, fitness through dance experience. Between my music abilities, gained through self-teachings, knowledge gained from Pyramind Music Production School in San Francisco, CA and my best friends 20 plus years of experience and education in dance, we are able to give back to the community, by providing an service that helps those struggling with finding joy in living a healthier lifestyle. Lit Fit has everything you need to learn the tools, to not only look amazing but also feel amazing, by providing good VIbes, sweat-breaking dance moves and feel-good music.

With DJing being my biggest hat, I’ve made MoJo’ VIbes Entertainment’s saying “Feel the Music, Breathe the Music.”

It’s all about living in that moment and allowing the music to take control of you… my biggest goal, while performing as a DJ, is to play those tracks that get you to close your eyes, move your hips, and let the music take over without you realizing it. Music is life!”

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
I’ve been a DJ for just under two years and whenever I’m asked how long I’ve been on my musical journey, the reaction is always the same. Those around me are impressed with the progress that I’ve made in such a short period of time. I couldn’t see what they saw. I didn’t trust the process. Nothing I did was “good enough.” Thankfully, my sisters are very iconic women in my life and they told me that it’s ok to celebrate small victories. I’ll put a spin on the words of the AMAZING women in my life.

Here is my advice:
Step 1: Figure out what your ULTIMATE goal is.
Step 2: Wake up EVERYDAY and tackle a small goal that adds value to your ultimate goal.
Step 3: Whenever a small goal makes you feel good, CELEBRATE it!

Life has its plan for you… stay consistent and TRUST THE PROCESS!
