Conversations with the Inspiring Jasmine “Razor Chic” Collins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine “Razor Chic” Collins.

Jasmine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The journey has been long, it took 20 years for me to get to where I am today, but hair has been very good to me and I’ve been good to it in return. I’ve been doing hair for over 25 years, but it was the last 5 years where I really started to see the value of my work and getting out of my own way. I worked my way through all types of environments, from shops, booths, high-end salons, and finally opened my own salon Razor Chic of Atlanta.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a stylist in of itself is hard, especially coming right out of school and there not being many professional brand salons in the African-American community. I find that there are too many shops and not enough salons, which is a shame because the team environment of a salon is crucial to the career development of a stylist. I recognized the power of working among people very early in my career. You learn things every day when you work with other people at a salon. For example, you learn styling and hair care techniques and you also learn what to do and what not to do. That being said, I am the person that I am today because of the experiences from all the places and people I’ve worked with. At the end of the day, I suggest trying to find a comfortable, upscale environment to help nurture and develop your career.

What should we know about Razor Chic? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
First and foremost, I am a master stylist and colorist that has been in the industry for more than 25 years. Through this time, I’ve watched people chose unrealistic hair goals by using damaging weaves and unhealthy hair practices, causing their natural hair to become damaged and break off. I’m passionate about restoring the natural crowns of people who have lost their hair due to these hair practices, which is why I have dedicated my art to transforming hair and giving my clients easy to manage and trendy styles all while using their real hair.

Being able to nurture hair back to its healthy state and to prove a point to the world that there are professional stylists left that listen to the hair and it’s needs. One of the things I pride myself in the most is being able to create the looks that my clients want without using extensions.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
– Oprah, who isn’t inspired by her?! She has paved the way for so many.
– Comedian and actress Sommore, she has been such an uplifting figure and inspiration to me.
– I’m close to both Kandi Burruss and NeNe Leakes, I’ve watched their journey and seen them grow into the people that they are today.
– Beyonce: She inspired me to really value my own worth and to work hard each and every day.
