Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Ammons.
Jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It’s always funny to be asked about “my story” mainly because I never truly believed I had a story. I guess it all began when my mom bought me a nude lip gloss for my 13th birthday…that was the day I fell in love with makeup. I wore makeup throughout middle and high school and got practice by using the girls on my bus or from my classes. As luck would have it, my first high school job was a nanny for a woman that was the neighborhood makeup artist. She did everything; individual lashes, brow waxing, and makeup. I studied her until I graduated and flew on my own.
I always tried to make makeup secondary in my life but that’s not how God planned it for me. In 2014, I took complete control of my life and decided to get everything in order. I lost my job, lost 100lbs and found a window of opportunity to do a reality show for Lifetime TV called “Big Women Big Love.” That brief moment of worldwide stardom solidified my seat at the table. Honestly, I am still enamored at the opportunity because it literally fell in my lap. Since the airing of the show, I’ve acquired my license in esthetics, as well as my ITEC qualification as a level 1 beauty therapist.
I have been fortunate to have had many blessings come my way. Since the show and graduating, I’ve done more than I could ever imagine. I am now the Beauty editor and contributing editor for Plastiq! Magazine and a full time make up instructor, I won Makeup Artist Of The Year by Sheen Magazine, I worked the 2019 Grammy’s as a makeup artist for several nominees, re-lost those 100lbs and now, I’ve added directing music videos for indie artists to my repertoire.
I’ve been called a success story on quite a few occasions but really, I’m just living my dreams.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A smooth road? Oh no, it hasn’t been. Traveling the unconventional road is the hardest thing to do. It requires self-discipline, courage, and most of all patience. As an instructor, I teach so many young beauty hopefuls that have these ideas that it’s going to happen for them overnight. Nothing in this industry comes easy. I’ve had to fight against the idea that makeup is a hobby. I did like most, went to college in pursuit of a degree and it didn’t pan out. I have tried to work in every industry; Dental, Logistics, Retail, Delivery Administration and early childhood education and none of those things panned out for me. When I got to the sink or swim part of life, I swam for my life. If I could offer any advice, I would tell young women looking to live this beautiful life would be to trust the process and the timing of their lives.
What should we know about Glam Boss? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a jack of many trades and in addition to being an accomplished makeup artist, I am also the beauty editor for Plastiq! Magazine. I am known for my makeup artistry and for being the villainous cast member on Lifetime’s “Big Women Big love.” I am the proudest of the growth of my business. I took my time, celebrated the up’s and lived through the downs. I believe my tenacity and industry knowledge sets me apart from most. I have worked in so many different facets that no matter where this life takes me I will be fine.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
There aren’t books on makeup that make me better, however, I have been reading “The People Factor” By Van Moody and it has been a game-changer. This work of literature has opened my eyes and given me a more clear understanding of relationships. Not just romantically but, platonically and professionally.
