Conversations with the Inspiring Kaylin N. James

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylin N. James.

Kaylin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
For as long as I can remember, I enjoyed taking photos, I would like to be in them or take them off my friends. In middle school, I would bring my point and shoot camera everywhere with me. In high school, my mother bought my first DSLR, I started to take photos, I had no idea of settings or how in depth the camera actually was, everything was coming out blurry, but I got better, did some googling & YouTubing & before you know it, I was reaching out to people to shoot. In college, I realized that I enjoyed portraiture more than anything. I started shooting with fashion bloggers in 2016 & by word of mouth and social media, I was able to grow my business. Around a year ago, I realized that I wanted more out of my work, I started to learn more to the art side of things, I wanted all of my images to have a meaning or story behind it. My work now focuses on sexuality, social issues, femininity, and soon to be animal welfare. I now have so many topics written down that I want to work on and I’m so excited to see what the future holds for me.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I can’t say that it has been extremely difficult for me, partly because I have a different outlook than some people. I just want to focus on my art and enjoy the feeling that I get when I create instead of being stuck on the idea of “successful.” I can definitely recommend doing what makes you happy and not focus on reaching the top of the success ladder. Think of your happiness as a success.

What should we know about Kaylin James Photography? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am really proud of my growth, I was able to develop a style and I decided on a path I would like to take. I remember how it feels to be clueless & not knowing, so that’s why I am so thankful for the growth.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
Photography is still a male-dominated field, so I think it is very important for women to show the world through their lens/eyes. Unfortunately, it takes a little more for women to be taken seriously than men, and that’s in many fields… this is constantly changing but is still present. I think it’s important to pay attention to any limitations you may notice and turn them into opportunities.
