Conversations with the Inspiring Natalie Milhouse

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Milhouse.

Natalie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
DIVINE Magazine, or better seen as Divine Enthusiast, is a platform catered to creatives and businesses of color. When I reflect on my childhood and my upbringing, I notice that art was and still is a common theme in my life and has always been a sense of therapy for me. Even my logos are two paintings I created years before DIVINE Magazine came to fruition, which I felt was divine in itself.

My story and my brand are rooted in self-discovery and the liberation that comes with it. There was a time when I did feel lost; a time where I felt like I didn’t know my purpose in life. I think taking a step back and doing the inner work, and asking myself, what do I want out of life? How do I want to navigate this world, or even, is the younger me proud of the current me? – is what ultimately forced me into discovering a platform that helps others express themselves, while still catering to my passion for helping elevate people, brands, and businesses of color.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s never smooth but it’s worth it. If you’re building anything from the ground up, it will be hard. I think back to the amount of time it took to come up with a name and platform for my brand and all I can say is that for me, it’s slowly paying off to take the time to get the foundation and the basics of my business solidified. By foundation, I mean taking the time out to ask the who, what, why, and how so that I could move confidently in my brand story. It also means doing a ton of inner work too.

I’ll share some advice that one woman shared with me. Just start. It won’t be perfect but starting and setting things in motion is key. I would also say to women that are just starting out that as much as it may feel like a competition, you have to get it in your head that you’re only in competition with yourself. You have to do it for you – don’t do it for anyone else. It’s with that thought and mindset that I feel complete fulfillment in the work I do.

What should we know about Divine Enthusiast? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
DIVINE is a quarterly digital publication that releases on the first day of each season. I serve as the Producer / Editor-In-Chief for the digital magazine. While my team is small, consisting of myself, and Creative Director, Hannah Larae, we are dedicated to creating a true divine community while being a source for creatives to gain inspiration.

Our in-house services include everything from written and digital content to curating campaigns that go beyond the surface.

I’m most proud of the authenticity that comes with interviewing creatives. We started a little over a year ago and the work is speaking for itself. I’m proud to know that all the content you’ll find on the site is timeless and in some way, relatable to all. What makes our platform unique is the modern intertwining of creativity and wellness. We also truly want to assist businesses in elevating their brands, taking advertising to the next level.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
My brother, Justin Milhouse for sure.  He’s a photographer in Detroit, MI. I’ve always been inspired by his vision and entrepreneurship. He’s always consistent and his passion for photography evident and visible through the quality of his work.  His motto continues to help me stay focus on my vision for the magazine: Imagine – Create – Expose. Women that inspire me would be my mother, Solange, Michelle Obama, and Elaine Welteroth.
