Conversations with the Inspiring Nicolette Rumph

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicolette Rumph.

Nicolette, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The purpose behind my brand stems from my own personal hair journey, growing up with relaxed hair for the majority of my childhood prompted my desire to change. I noticed complications with my hair from breakage to minimal growth. I immediately took it upon myself to conduct research and learn more about how to actually take care and maintain my natural hair. After acquiring more insight over the course of a few months, I chose to begin transitioning my last year of high school and I eventually cut the remainder of my relaxed ends off. I instantly fell in love with it and questioned why I hadn’t done it sooner. I followed nearly every natural hair guru that existed in the YouTube realm, recording every step to a “perfect regimen” and every name of the proclaimed “best product for 4C hair”, assuming that was the way to go. I reached a point in my journey where I began to encounter challenges even after I removed my dead ends. My hair wasn’t really growing and ultimately I accepted that it wasn’t in its healthiest state. I had to conduct a self-evaluation and assess what I could do differently, so I began to opt for healthier product alternatives that were free of sulfates, parabens, and other harsh ingredients. My interest in hair and beauty had grown stronger over the years. I began to convince all of my friends and even immediate family members to go natural! I realized the effects of the harmful ingredients in the products I was using took a toll on my hair and it wasn’t until years later I became inspired to create my own brand. I want to help both women and men enhance their self-confidence, fall even deeper in love with their authentic texture, and provide individuals with a variety of organic products to help them reach their desired natural hair goals.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I definitely encountered some struggles along the way, understanding what my hair needed to evolve was a significant challenge in itself. The most crucial challenge I would say I experienced during my natural hair journey was the negative feedback I received from those around me, but because I was aware of the purpose behind my decision, external influences didn’t really impact me. To the woman that is considering transitioning or even completely chopping off all of her hair, I would simply tell her to own the woman God has designed her to be. You have to be accepting and genuinely love who you are despite what outside sources attempt to embed in your mind. Whether that be friends, family, or the media, don’t let someone else’s opinion stand between you and your happiness. Acknowledging your worth is a common problem that I know a lot of women of all ages struggle with, but the best thing you can do is ignore any force that tries to convince you that you are anything less than beautiful inside and out. Through my platform, I will continue to encourage and empower women and men to love themselves wholeheartedly. In today’s society, it is no surprise that women are primarily measured by socially constructed norms. There is this perfect perception of beauty that women, especially women of color are expected to conform to. If a woman’s hair isn’t bone straight it is seen as “untamed” or “unkept” because she may have a curlier or kinkier texture. Women in corporate and even young women in middle and high schools are being discriminated against and prohibited from attending school because their hair is deemed as a “conflict against school policy”. There have been so many instances where this type of behavior has been considered acceptable and as an advocate for self-love, I wanted to project this through my brand so individuals are reminded that their manes are crowns and should be treated as such in any setting.

What should we know about Pink Petal Organics? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Pink Petal Organics is a small business fully operated by CEO Nicolette Rumph, an undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing. Pink Petal Organics provides exceptional customer service to every individual that makes a purchase. We want to ensure every customer enjoys their experience and doesn’t feel abandoned post-purchase. The CEO follows up with customers to make sure their shipments have been delivered on time and the products are in great condition. Pink Petal Organics also thrives at formulating products that combat common concerns such as dryness, brittleness, thinning, and unmanageability. Our natural ingredients and handmade production process sets us apart from competition. We prohibit the use of harsh chemicals that strip the hair of its natural oils or alter the structure of one’s true texture. A lot of the bigger haircare brands aren’t cognizant of the long-term effects their ingredients can have on customers. I want to offer individuals with curly, kinky, and coily hair better quality products that won’t serve as a challenge to achieve growth but in fact help them reach their ultimate goal. The idea behind each product is for a woman and/or man to feel a sense of empowerment and realize the true beauty their natural texture possesses. Pink Petal Organics isn’t just a hair product brand, it instills a message and sense of confidence in everyone that uses it.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally? The biggest barriers to female leadership in my opinion exist because of the deeply rooted complexity of fear. Fear of not performing well enough, fear of thinking our work can be outdone, FEAR OF FAILING. One key point I’m sure a lot of successful female entrepreneurs can attest to, is that failure is imperative to experience in one’s journey. It’s apart of the process, in order for one to grow and evolve at some point she must learn from her mistakes. I also feel as though there aren’t enough women supporting one another. It’s normal for someone to feel discouraged when they don’t feel like they have a dependable support system. Whether a woman is seeking to acquire a higher role within an institution, large corporation, or start her own business I think like-minded women should automatically gravitate towards that. Times have changed and now that we have the opportunity to make history and be leaders within our communities and career industries, having eachothers support is crucial! Not only does it help a woman feel more confident in her pursuit to work towards obtaining her desired leadership role, but just knowing that she has a strong foundation can really be the catalyst to jumpstart her goals. Lastly, there are a lot of individuals in positions of authority that underestimate the capabilities of women. From film to the business industry, often times women aren’t taken seriously in the workplace. When others don’t seem to recognize the value in our hard work that is constantly being invested, sometimes it can be very discouraging and we become fearful of the future. Ultimately we have to become more confident within ourselves, conquer our goals as a united front and realize that we are the future. Nothing or no one is going to stand in the way of that!
