Today we’d like to introduce you to Makayla Adams.
Hi Makayla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started when I was a little girl, I was always around my grandmother; a very crafty person. I would sit in her craft room and watch her and a lot of times, she would ask for help with small things. When I got to middle school, all my friends would ask me to do their poster boards, cut their shirts and or decorate them. I often got in trouble for cutting up my clothes. I would watch different craft diy videos on YouTube. When I made it to high school, I decided shirts were what I wanted to focus on so I did my research and told my mother, she went without paying a bill and purchased the machine for me and the rest is history…
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been an easy road. Not having a mentor or somebody I personally knew doing the craft that I was doing was hard so all I had to go off of was YouTube videos. Not to mention the Startup cost is very expensive and I don’t come from a wealthy family my mom was a single mother so I was trying to make ends meet and get my materials the best way I could. For a while, I wasn’t having any business because A lot of people didn’t know me. So I was having to do free shirts just to make a name for myself so that was taking away money from my pockets.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a crafter. “Give me a task and I’m going to Execute it every time” I started doing vinyl shirts and I have mastered that, I always knew it was more that I could be doing so I ventured off into sublimation, which allowed me to do more custom items such as phone cases, pillows, mousepads jewelry and so much. I found myself doing things I always thought I would have to buy from somebody else.
What I am most proud of is that I am self-taught. Yes, I watched videos but I never had anybody side by side with me to teach me and that I could ask questions to. I built my business from the ground up with no handouts. Yes, there tons of people that do the same thing I do but they don’t do it like me. My work is 100% every time the way I communicate with my customers and Just the way I bring people’s dreams to a beautiful reality.
What does success mean to you?
Success is being able to accomplish whatever you are trying to accomplish. You don’t have to be rich or famous to be successful. If you accomplish the goals that you set for yourself, that is a success. You succeeded in a goal you set. So be proud!
